|授業科目名||Linguistics for Communication／英語表現（前期）|
|科目の目的・到達目標||Part of a two-course series, along with Grammar for Communication, this course draws on the study of linguistics to help students develop communication skills in English. Building on the centrally important relationship in linguistics between sound and meaning, the course teaches students about aspects of language use that lie beyond the grammar and vocabulary and applies principles of English phonology and English pragmatics to English communication. Students will develop improved pronunciation through an understanding of distinctive features, syllables, stress, and intonation and improved communicative effectiveness through an understanding of deixis, presupposition, implicature, speech acts and politeness. Students will learn to apply their own theoretical understanding to practical experience through extensive classroom exercises.|
|授業の概要||Students are required to buy "Clear Speech" as a textbook and will be given lecture materials on "Pragmatics" in class. In each class, the first half will be spent on active practice on pronunciation, and the second half on lecture on pragmatics and group excises. A short review quiz will be given in the beginning of every class.|
|評価方法||Two-thirds of attendance is required for credit recognition. When you miss five classes, you will automatically fail the course.
