|科目の目的・到達目標||This is a general English course aimed at improving students' level of confidence in communicating about many general day to day events and current affairs topics in English.|
|授業の概要||This is primarily a speaking and listening course using real life situations and current affairs topics, incorporating skills of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, reading, listening, speaking, critical thinking, writing and delivering presentations. Each unit starts by introducing the vocabulary needed to understand the listening and reading exercises, followed by relevant grammar exercises and finishes with a TED talk. Students use critical thinking to discuss topics arising from the Talk and then each write up mini presentations which will be delivered in small groups. Presentation topics will be chosen as students progress through the unit. Students are expected to spend time outside class hours on their presentations. Research is encouraged.|
|授業計画||There are 10 units in the book. Units 6-10 will be studied in the second semester, with each unit taking about 3 lessons. Each unit is divided into 5 sections. Sections A and B will be studied in the first lesson. Sections C and D, in the second lesson and Section E in the third.

Lesson 5: 7C Grammar - have/get something done. Listening - Services. Pronunciation - Sentence Stress.
7D: Ted Talk - Grow your own clothes.
Lesson 6: 7E Speaking - Buying and selling. Writing and presentations.
Unit 8: "Effective Communication"
Lesson 7: 8A Vocabulary for effective communication. Vocabulary building - negative prefixes. Listening - communicating from an international space station. 8B Reading - Intercultural communication. Critical Thinking.
Lesson 8: 8C Grammar - Reported speech. Listening/speaking- language learning apps. 8D Ted Talk - 10 ways to have a better conversation.
Lesson 9: 8E Speaking with correct intonation. Writing and presentations.
Unit 9 "Unexpected Entertainment."
Lesson 10: 9A Vocabulary for creative arts. Vocabulary building - expressions with "make". Listening - Entertainment. 9B Reading - Fast art, big art.
Lesson 11: 9C Grammar - Relative clauses. Reading- A bit of culture. Photo journalism. 9D Ted talk - TV.
Lesson 12: 9E Speaking - Recommendations for entertainment. Writing and presentations.
Unit 10 "Time"
Lesson 13: 10A Vocabulary - Phrasal verbs about time. Listening - Older people offering advice.
10B reading - The clock maker who changed the world.
Lesson 14: 10C Grammar - Modals of speculation, deception, and regret. 10D Ted talk - Inside the mind of a procrastinator.

|評価方法||Grading will be based on class participation, attitude, improvement in language skill, 1 written test, a speaking test, a listening test and mini presentations. 80% attendance is required to pass the course.|
