|科目の目的・到達目標||This is a general english course, with the focus on listening and speaking, aimed at improving students' level of confidence in communicating about many current affairs topics in English.|
|授業の概要||This is a listening and speaking course using authentic situations and current affairs topics. Students will be required to listen to several authentic listenings related to the theme of the unit, followed by a Ted talk, take notes, speak in pairs or groups, discuss ideas and give opinions. Vocabulary needed to understand the unit is introduced at the beginning of the unit along with pronunciation exercises. The final exercise is to give individual presentations in small groups at the completion of each chapter, related to the topic. Students are expected to spend some time out of class hours preparing the presentations. Research is encouraged.|
|授業計画||There are 8 units in the book. One unit will cover about 3 lessons. Units 5-8 will be taught in Semester 2.
Unit 5: "Engineered by Nature". (Engineering and Robotics)
Lesson 1: Listening to a documentary of a slide show. The Science of Surfaces. Listening skill - Recognise references to key terms. Critical thinking.
Lesson 2: Pronunciation - Linking sounds. Ted talk- why I make robots the size of a grain of rice.
Lesson 3: Discuss a newspaper article on robot use today. Presentations - applications for biomimicry projects.
Lesson 4: Presentations continued.
Unit 6: "Lending a Hand" (Business and Philanthropy)
Lesson 5: Listening to a lecture with a slide show on Microloans: Breaking the Cycle of Poverty. Listening skill - recognize facts and opinions. Speaking skill - Express an opinion.
Lesson 6: Ted talk - Should you donate differently. Discussion about economics.
Lesson 7: Presentations - How to donate money to people in need.
Lesson 8: Presentations continued.
Unit 7: "Less is More" (Psychology)
Lesson 9: Listening exercise on a lecture with a slide show - More choice, More Happiness. Listening skill - listen for rhetorical questions. Pronunciation - Intonation in yes/no and choice questions.
Lesson 10: Ted talk - Less stuff, more happiness. Presentation - Less is more.
Lesson 11: Presentations - continued.
Unit 8: "Justice in the Jungle" (Wildlife Conservation & Innovation)
Lesson 12: Listening to an interview of a slide show - Fight the traffickers. Listening skill - Listen for phrases that signal what to expect.
Lesson 12: Pronunciation - Intonation. Note- taking skill - Mind maps. Ted talk - Drone's eye view of conservation. DVD on Animal rescue. Presentations - Animal that is under threat.

Lesson 15: Review.
|評価方法||Grading will be based on class participation, attitude, a listening and a speaking test, and presentations. 80% attendance is required to pass the course.|
