授業の概要
<学位授与方針と当該授業科目の関連>
この科目は、問題解決力(外国語とコミュニケーションの能力及びコンピューターを利用した統計・情報処理と分析の能力を用いて、科学技術及び社会の急速な変化に対応しながら、さまざまな問題を解決することができる)の修得に関わる科目です。
<概要>
The situation or story in each unit represents a theme that students reflect upon, discuss and share their ideas about in pairs or small groups.
The themes represent personal issues, such as life goals, friendships and relationships, plus social issues such as equal rights, ethics, globalization, environmental concerns, conflict and peace, and education.
Students are also required to apply critical thinking skills and debate certain issues.
Research is required for some topics.

授業計画と内容
TEXT:- There are 10 chapters in the book. Chapters 1-5 will be studied in the first semester. Students are expected to do some of the preparation for the mini presentations at home. Since the topics for the presentations are in the text, it is expected that students give the topics some thought before class. When the text is not being used, students will in turn be expected to find articles of interest, for the class to discuss. The nominated students are expected to send the article to the teacher a few days before class so preparation questions can be made. All students will be expected to do this once each term.
Lesson 1: Introduction to course. Unit 1: FOOD: A: Listening. Conversation. Street Food. B: Reading. The Problem with Sugar Listening. Video: Slow Food.
Lesson 2: Students work on mini-presentation in pairs, designing a restaurant, menu, and decor. Present presentations in groups.
Lesson 3: Nominated students bring articles of interest to discuss in class. Teacher makes discussion questions before hand.
Lesson 4: Unit 2: FESTIVALS: A: Listening. Messy Festivals. Conversation. B Reading. Festival in the Desert. Discussion. Video: The Festival of Lights.
Lesson 5: Unit 2: Students work in pairs and prepare a poster presentation of a festival of their choice.
Lesson 6: Unit 2: Poster presentation on festival of choice. Homework: Big Picture 1.
Lesson 7: Nominated students bring articles of interest to discuss in class. Teacher makes discussion questions before hand.
Lesson 8: Unit 3: CITIES A: Listening. Istanbul Walking Tour. Conversation. Reading - Bogota. Listening. Discussion Video: Urban Earth. Individual Flipgrid, presentation on - "which would you prefer, to live in the city or the country." Why. Give reasons.
Lesson 9: Watch a short movie in class. Write impression and share with others.
Lesson 10: Unit 4: JOBS: Listening. About a Car Racing Driver. Conversation. B: Reading. Future Occupations. Listening. Discussion. Video: A Day in the life of a Wildlife Photographer. Homework. the Big Picture 2.
Lesson 11: Nominated students bring articles of interest to discuss in class. Teacher makes discussion questions before hand.
Lesson 12: Unit 5: MUSIC: A: Listening to music clips. Conversation. B: Reading. Music with a message. Listening. Discussion. Video: The Zawoses of Tanzania. Discussion on Music preferences.
Lesson 13: Nominated students bring articles of interest to discuss in class. Teacher makes discussion questions before hand.
Lesson 14: Individual Presentations on a topic of choice. Review of course.
