科目の目的・到達目標 | Objectives: 1) to offer an overview of the Environmental Movement; 2) to have students engage deeply in such topics as Endangered Species, Environmental Law, and Green Economic Growth. I will use documentaries and films to ensure that all students, regardless of English ability, can understand. |
授業の概要 | Environmentalism 2 will focus on indigenous peoples and how they have become leaders against corporate environmental destruction; it will be more on the International Environmental Movement (versus the US in the first semester) and more on what the world is doing today to address issues of Climate Change and Pollution. We will focus a little more deeply on topics introduced the first semester: the Rio Declaration (1992), the Kyoto Protocol (1997), the Oslo Declaration (2006); the Earth Summit (2012). The topics we will consider: 1) The Rise of Severe Weather Patterns; 2) Humanity’s Special Place & Responsibility; 3) Humanity’s Disconnection with Nature; 4) The Philosophy of Limitless Growth; 5) Climate Change/Earth Destruction/Species Extinction/Political Paralysis; 6) How to Live Sustainably; 7) Intelligent Design/Reducing Human Footprint; 8) The Way Forward. I hope students will gain a deep sense of what the Environmental Movement is doing and how ordinary people are contributing to it. |
