科目の目的・到達目標 | The English Communication courses aim to equip students with the communicative skills they need to feel comfortable speaking and listening to English in a variety of settings, social, academic, and professional. Students will participate in activities designed to improve their listening comprehension and ability to make themselves understood in spoken English, including formal or informal presentations or other activities relevant to their personal and academic interests. Course materials may include news reports, interviews, and lectures from radio, television, video, or film, as well as materials prepared by students themselves to accompany presentations, debates, or discussions. |
授業の概要 | Global Issues 1 The theme is on the hidden injustices all around us. Some of the topics you'll be considering this semester: racism, corporate control, freedom of speech, righting past wrongs, globalization and child labor, people power, and changes in capitalism. Several of the listening segments are about North America. In particular, we'll be thinking a little about how the small things people do to help can make a big difference. |

授業外の学習活動 | Students are required to spend at least an hour per week studying textbooks, class materials, or handouts in order to prepare for the next class and also to review material studied in previous classes. Every other class will have a discussion. This is for you to develop your opinion and perhaps to debate or at least to compare opinions with other students in your group. Every other week you will also have internet research, for the necessary background information to help you develop an opinion. In listening to a variety of accents, particularly from people whose native language is not English, you will first learn to get the general meaning of spoken English, though you may not understand every word. Most of your work for the class will be done outside of class, to prepare for the class, especially for the discussions. I will give students the websites for the video segments. Please watch the segment each week as many times as necessary as you follow the instructions in your homework pages for the Vocabulary, Getting Main Ideas, Listening For Details, Fill In Blanks, Final Details, Internet Research, and Things To Talk About. |
