科目の目的・到達目標 | to learn to analyze written English so you can improve your own writing. to review and/or practice prewriting techniques like free-writing, brainstorming, and planning to make sure you are supporting your ideas well, that you are using other people’s ideas properly and making your own writing more organized. to learn how to organize an academic essay. to write well-formed multi-paragraph essays. to improve your writing through a multiple-draft process. to work constructively with peers to improve your writing. to reduce grammar/spelling/vocabulary mistakes. to make you a more confident writer of English. |
授業の概要 | Academic Writing: This course is an introduction to basic academic writing. You will review the paragraph writing skills that you have already learned and will learn how to develop your ideas into a multi-paragraph essay. Your writing assignments will be as a process (multi-draft) with opportunities for you to edit and revise your work with the help of your classmates and myself. All the materials will be provided for the class. Please buy a 2-ring binder to keep handouts and bring your dictionary to each class. Essay 1: For or Against TV/WEB-SURFING--This assignment is to give you practice arguing a point-of-view, for or against. The important thing for you to do this in your own words. You will learn to support your body paragraphs. Essay 2: For or Against Fast Food--This assignment is to give you more practice arguing a point-of-view, for or against, but also has a focus on "development of ideas" and "organization." In this assignment, you will learn to write a proper introduction. Essay 3: Personal Advice--This assignment is to help you to express yourself in sequences or stages: First, Second, and Third. You will learn to develop your ideas by offering examples. In this assignment you will write both a proper introduction and a conclusion. |

評価方法 | Evaluation is based on your contribution to all class proceedings, 50% for the quality of your notebook, 50% for successful completion of a portfolio of completed writing. Attendance is important in achieving a good grade. |

授業外の学習活動 | Writing takes a lot of time. Students would plan to write, and review their writing every day for approximately 30 to 60 minutes. |
