|科目の目的・到達目標||The English Writing courses aim to prepare students for tasks in a variety of settings in which they may be expected to express themselves in written English. Students will work to improve accuracy in grammar and syntax, and will practice composing English paragraphs and short personal and academic essays, in the latter incorporating and documenting material drawn from one or more sources.|
|授業の概要||This course seeks to develop an understanding of the process of academic writing in English. Stressing the importance of developing a theme on a topic when writing academic compositions, the course works through this writing process from planning (identifying a theme), drafting (translating theme into organized structure) to revising (coherence and expression).
Semester 1 focuses on the application of the mind map (MM) technique to summarizing readings, combining information from multiple sources and composition planning. During the second part of Semester 1, the course introduces and discusses some of the fundamental elements of a composition (including theme, structure, body patterns, and citation of supporting evidence), while working on a discipline-relevant topic in some detail as a vehicle for practicing the writing process.
Class content and organization will vary through the course, but the first semester classes will be a combination of working through a series of handouts about various aspects of the writing process, and practicing the implementation of those idea though a shared writing topic.
