科目の目的・到達目標 The English Writing courses aim to prepare students for tasks in a variety of settings in which they may be expected to express themselves in written English. This course will build on, develop and advance skills and subjects learnt in semester one.
授業の概要 This course builds on the first semester English writing course. Students will deepen their understanding of structure initially at the level of the paragraph and the sentence. By the end of the course, students will have produced one longer piece of writing that incorporates three different styles of paragraphing - definition, description and narration. Attention will also be paid to style and tone, for example passive and active voice.

授業計画 Class 1 – Introduction to course and reintroduction to first semester topics
Class 2 – review paragraph structure; description paragraph
Class 3 – Narrative paragraph; discuss assignment 1
Class 4 – Research for assignment 1
Class 5 – definition paragraph
Class 6 – Introductory paragraph
Class 7 – Sentence structure and one fun thing
Class 8 – Signal phrases and metadiscourse
Class 9 – Opinion paragraphs and class debate
Class 10 – Passive and active language, singular verb and noun agreement
Class 11 – Essay Structure and sequencing; plagiarism versus paraphrase
Class 12 – How to conclude paragraphs, how to write a conclusion
Class 13 – Signposting and transitions between paragraphs
Class 14 – Words, style and meaning

評価方法
Participation  20%
Presentation 20%
Two written assignments 60%


Note: Students who are absent four times or more during the semester will receive the grade ‘F’.

授業外の学習活動 Students are required to spend at least an hour per week studying textbooks, class materials, or handouts to prepare for the next class and to review material studied in previous classes.
