|科目の目的・到達目標||The Academic Writing courses begin with practice in the development of English paragraphs and end with the presentation of researched and documented papers in the Policy Sciences and Cultural Studies. Work in the courses will include activities designed to help students select and limit topics related to their own academic interests, to use reference materials available in the Chuo libraries to locate sources related to these, and relying on these and other sources to compose essays that are fully and fairly documented.|
|授業の概要||This course will build on academic writing and research skills introduced in first year, with particular emphasis placed on students producing longer, coherently argued and well referenced pieces of academic writing. Students will be encouraged to collaborate in the research, writing and drafting of reports and research projects in class and online.
In this semester, you will develop your primary research skills, carrying out surveys and interviews on a chosen topic related to contemporary issues, policy or culture in Japan.
1. Further develop skills in academic writing, research, editing and argument, with the aim of producing a significant research paper using primary research.
2. Completion of individual and group research projects.
3. Introduce online components to students’ writing practices.
|授業計画||Week 1 Introduction and overview of semester; devising individual research and essay topics and beginning research
Week 2 Introducing the basics of essay structure; developing research skills and reviewing citation formats and reference list.
Week 3 Development and discussion of essay topics and research material with other students; essay and research planning.
Week 4 Presentation of essay topics and plans, discussion of research so far and key research question/s.
Week 5 Writing introductory paragraphs
Week 6 Peer review of introductory paragraphs; developing body of the essay.
Week 7 Developing body of the essay; writing and research
Week 8 Developing body of the essay; writing and research
Week 9 Concluding paragraphs
Week 10 Peer review and editing of first draft of essays. Submission of first draft.
Week 11 Further research, editing and re-writing. Review of citation format.
Week 12 Peer review and editing of second draft of essays.
Week 13 Further research, editing and re-writing. Review of reference lists.
Week 14 Peer review and editing of third draft of essays.
Week 15 Final review and submission of essays.
