授業の概要

In Semester 1 students will learn how to think critically and express themselves clearly in English. Each unit of the textbook covers a topic with a reading activity; pair and group speaking tasks; vocabulary study; a listening activity; and discussion work. There will also be regular speeches, which will scaffold students in the skills necessary to confidently deliver presentations. Knowledge of key vocabulary will be evaluated in online work, and discussion skills will be evaluated in an end of term discussion test.

科目目的

The purpose of this course is to improve students’ English communication skills, in preparation for their major course subjects in year 2 and beyond. The aims will be to promote critical thinking, and help students improve their fluency, conversational skills, discussion skills, and presentation skills. There will also be a focus on travel language, to help prepare students for studying abroad.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

a. express themselves fluently and spontaneously on a wide range of subjects, giving points of view at length.
b. conduct discussions with a high level of discussion skills, using appropriate discussion language.
c. understand extended speech and follow arguments on topics not familiar to them.
d. deal with most situations likely to arise whilst traveling in an area
where the language is spoken.

Key vocabulary and concepts from each unit will be tested in regular quizzes, and students will be expected to study for these. In addition, extra online study related to the textbook can be carried out online.
