授業の概要

This course examines the central role played by the representation of contrast in linguistic description since the time of Saussure and its role in phonology in maintaining or neutralizing contrast in surface forms. Principles regarding the representation of contrast in language generally will be studied across a number of languages and then applied to English in particular. Alternative theoretical frameworks will be studied in order to identify the strengths and weaknesses to rule-based, representation-based, and constraint-based accounts of contrast and neutralization.

科目目的

This is a problem-based workshop and seminar course. Theoretical concepts will be presented and illustrated with data from a number of different languages, and students will apply them to English, and in some cases to Japanese, in a workshop format. Following a basic introduction to the elements of phonetic description and phonological analysis, students will become proficient with the theoretical machinery for analyzing language data and recognizing generalizations in phonological patterns. We will then examine critically the arguments presented in published papers and consider how to address remaining empirical questions left unanswered by those analyses. Papers will generally be discussed in a seminar format, with student presentations and student led discussions.

到達目標

By the end of this course, students will have a solid understanding of the principles that govern sound patterns in languages, with an emphasis on the important role played by contrast. They will have a broad but detailed understanding of the phonology of English in particular, with a general understanding of theoretical principles that could be used to analyze the phonology of any language. Moreover, students will be able to recognize the phonological characteristics that distinguish different languages from one another and an ability to predict difficulties for second language learners when they encounter unfamiliar sounds patterns in a new language.
