授業の概要

＜学位授与方針と当該授業科目の関連＞
この科目は、問題解決力（外国語とコミュニケーションの能力及びコンピューターを利用した統計・情報処理と分析の能力を用いて、科学技術及び社会の急速な変化に対応しながら、さまざまな問題を解決することができる）の修得に関わる科目です。
＜概要＞
The situation or story in each unit represents a theme that students reflect upon, discuss and share their ideas about in pairs and small groups. Students are also required to apply critical thinking skills and debate certain issues. Research is required for some topics.

To help them feel confident in expressing opinions on important issues

授業計画と内容

There are 10 chapters in the book. Chapters 1-5 will be studied in the first semester. Students are expected to do some of the preparation for the mini presentations at home. Since the topics for the presentations are in the text, it is expected that students give the topics some thought before class.

At the start of the lesson students will in turn, research and prepare a short summary of 4-5 sentences, of a current affairs topic, which is expected to lead to a class discussion. About 4 students a week will be expected to do this, hence each student will do it on average 2- 3 times a term depending on the size of the class.

Lesson 1: Introduction to course. Unit 1: FOOD: Brainstorm the topic. Students then write how they feel about the topic, what areas interest them in terms of current trends in society related to food, then present their writings to other members of the class.

Lesson 2: A: Listening. Conversation. Street Food. B: Reading. The Problem with Sugar Listening. Video: Slow Food.

Lesson 3: Students work on mini-presentation in pairs about a topic of choice related to Food. Present presentations in groups.

Lesson 4: Unit 2: FESTIVALS: Brainstorm the topic. Students then write how they feel about the topic, what attracts them most, then present their writings to other members of the class.

Lesson 5: A: Listening. Messy Festivals. Conversation. B Reading. Festival in the Desert. Discussion. Video: The Festival of Lights. Supplementary materials - other video viewing of festivals and discussion.

Lesson 6: Unit 2: Students work individually to prepare a poster presentation of a festival of their choice from anywhere in the world.

Lesson 7: Unit 2: Poster presentation on festival of choice. Homework: Big Picture 1.

Lesson 8: Unit 3: CITIES A: Listening. Istanbul Walking Tour. Conversation. Reading - Bogota. Listening. Discussion Video: Urban Earth. I

Lesson 9: Students prepare a survey on preferences related to living in the city or country.

Lesson 10: Watch a short movie in class. Write impression and share with others.

Lesson 11: Unit 4: JOBS: Listening. About a Car Racing Driver. Conversation. B: Reading. Future Occupations. Listening. Discussion. Video: A Day in the life of a Wildlife Photographer. Homework. the Big Picture 2.

Lesson 12: Unit 5: MUSIC: A: Listening to music clips. Conversation. B: Reading. Music with a message. Listening. Discussion. Video: The Zawoses of Tanzania. Discussion on Music preferences.

Lesson 13: Present presentation in small groups on a traditional instrument, prepared at home for homework.

Lesson 14: Individual Presentations on a topic of choice. All preparation done as homework. Review of course.
