<概要>
This is an ADVANCED course. Students will be expected to read and comprehend authentic English texts at a fast pace and engage in discussions in English about the content in real time.
The use of AI or digital translation tools will NOT be allowed during the class period.
The topic of this course is understanding multimodal texts (texts that combine written text and some other “mode” of communication such as images, audio, video, etc.). Using a collaborative approach, this course will encourage critical thinking, group discussion, and application of the content through gathering and analyzing data.
Each class will consist of some combination of the following: 1) reading and discussions about the materials combined with group work related to the goals of the course, 2) lectures related to independent study of English (in terms of vocabulary, grammar, analysis of multimodal texts, and pragmatics) and 3) presentations of original, creative, independent research projects.

その他特記事項
This is an ADVANCED course. Students will be expected to read and comprehend authentic English texts at a fast pace and engage in discussions in English about the content in real time.
Here is an excerpt from materials that will be used in class. If you are able to read this with relative ease, this is a good class for you:
“Japanese animation followed a similar path into the global marketplace. Anime, like monster movies, grew out of Western models but soon developed into a distinctive, highly creative form. The first animated films seem to have reached Japan from Europe around the turn of the twentieth century, and Japanese animators began to experiment with their own shorts about a decade later. …
By the 1970s, Japan’s dramatic postwar economic growth had elevated it to the ranks of the world’s leading industrial nations. Japan gained a reputation for producing high-quality, affordable entertainment hardware: the miniature transistor radios that delighted global consumers from the late 1950s on, the videocassette recorders (VCRs) that dominated international markets from the 1970s on, and the Sony Walkman, which made recorded music truly portable and personal, introduced in 1979.”
This class will be conducted entirely in English, and all assignments must be completed in English.
