授業の概要

この科目は、問題解決力(外国語とコミュニケーションの能力及びコンピューターを利用した統計・情報処理と分析の能力を用いて、科学技術及び社会の急速な変化に対応しながら、さまざまな問題を解決することができる)の修得に関わる科目です。
<概要>
The release of generative A.I. programs appears to threaten many of the social orders which we had previously taken for granted. In this class, we will engage in deep reading of texts that will inform our in-class discussions about what it means to be human in the age of A.I. Class time will be divided into two themes: 1) learning about the context (history, functions, implications, etc.) surrounding the emergence of A.I. and 2) reading academic texts regarding philosophical and sociological concepts to help us reflect on our experiences and plan for a future that will be influenced by technological changes in the coming years. The materials we will use for in-class reading include timely newspaper articles and short excerpts from academic books. Considering that the nature of work is likely to change dramatically, we will focus on what language skills are needed to provide a check on the use of generative A.I., e.g., reading for comprehension, summarizing texts, and writing responses to challenging ideas.
This class meets twice a week. All course materials will be distributed by the instructor. Class time will be spent reading English materials at a deep level, making summaries of content, and discussing the meaning of the texts in small groups. In the last few minutes of each class meeting, students will write responses to the class content in journal form.
A key part of this course will be a strict NO SCREENS policy in the classroom. Materials will be prepared and distributed on paper and the instructor will carry reference books to every class. Students are encouraged to bring their own paper or electronic dictionary (the one exception to the no screens policy) and proper writing materials.

Students should review materials independently after class to process grammar and vocabulary deeply and focus on building vocabulary and fluency. Tasks for which students will use or research generative A.I. outside of the classroom will be assigned periodically throughout the semester.

This is an ADVANCED course. Students will be expected to read and comprehend authentic English texts at a fast pace and engage in discussions in English about the content in real time.
Here is an excerpt from materials comparable to what will be used in class. If you are able to read this with relative ease, this is a good class for you:
“Japanese animation followed a similar path into the global marketplace. Anime, like monster movies, grew out of Western models but soon developed into a distinctive, highly creative form. The first animated films seem to have reached Japan from Europe around the turn of the twentieth century, and Japanese animators began to experiment with their own shorts about a decade later. …
By the 1970s, Japan’s dramatic postwar economic growth had elevated it to the ranks of the world’s leading industrial nations. This class will be conducted entirely in English, and all assignments must be completed in English.
