授業の概要
The Graduation Research Report (ゼミ論) is a research paper that each graduating student in the seminar must write alone and submit as part of the requirements for graduation. Although each student writes their Report individually, the research they conduct may be completed either individually or as part of a research group with other students in the seminar. The Report must include:
a) a clear hypothesis or research question
b) summary and discussion of relevant previous published research
c) careful description of experimental method
d) precise reporting of original data collected as part of the research project
e) thorough analysis of the data
f) the student's own interpretation of the research findings
科目目的
The objective of the Graduation Research Report (ゼミ論) is to learn and understand through first-hand experience the process of research in language sciences. Students will join a research team with other students to design a language experiment, first selecting an appropriate experimental method for addressing a research question or testing a hypothesis, then creating the stimulus materials and collecting data from participants who perform the experiment. They will analyze the the data they have collected using statistical methods to reveal the findings in the data. Finally, students learn the standard format for reporting scientific findings in a research paper and further develop their English writing skills.
到達目標
Students will gain a deeper understanding for interpreting experimental results. They will learn to recognize whether the methods used for conducting an experiment actually measure the language skill and/or linguistic knowledge they claim to measure. Students will also learn to judge whether analytical methods used for interpreting data provide valid conclusions. Most importantly, through their own research, students will uncover something interesting about the human language behavior and the influence that knowledge of one language has on the use of another language.

授業終了後の課題提出/その他
授業時間外の学修の内容(その他の内容等)
Students will begin creating experimental materials during class time but complete them outside of class. Data collection will also take place outside of class time. Assignments will be submitted along the way, and students will receive feedback and advice when revisions are necessary.
