授業の概要
When we talk about “Happiness” — or “Conflict” — or “Community” — what are we really talking about? Behind these words are ideas. Sometimes one word might even have several different contradictory meanings. Understanding these ideas and meaning is vital in understanding the modern English-speaking world.
In this course we will study a variety of ideas in Western culture through close examination of specific English-language words and phrases. We will examine both the contemporary meaning of these words and phrases, and the historical meanings, tracking ideas as they evolve and change over time.
科目目的
By the end of the course, students will have gained an introductory understanding of Western culture. They will have an understanding of meaning of key ideas in modern Anglophone (English-language) culture, and the history of such ideas. They will have experience analysis of such ideas in many different aspects of culture, including media, the arts, and politics.
This will deepen their understanding of both history and the global community, and aid them in navigating the complicated world of contemporary Anglophone culture.
