授業の概要

Important Notice
All classes will be conducted using both English and Japanese.

-----
This course delves into the imaginative worlds of science fiction through a curated selection of short stories spanning the 20th century. Science fiction offers a unique lens to explore humanity’s greatest hopes, fears, and questions about the future. By examining themes such as alien intelligence, artificial intelligence, morality, and the impact of technology, we will uncover the ways in which this genre challenges societal norms and imagines new possibilities.

The chosen authors—ranging from early pioneers like Stanley G. Weinbaum to literary icons like Ursula K. Le Guin—represent a diversity of voices and approaches within the genre. These works, written across decades, highlight the evolution of science fiction as a medium for both critique and creativity. Through discussion, analysis, and reflection, students will engage deeply with the texts and develop a greater understanding of science fiction’s role in shaping cultural and intellectual thought.

Attendance Policy

Absences:
-A maximum of 3 absences is allowed throughout the year; exceeding this limit (4 or more absences) will result in automatic failure of the class.
-Excused absences are limited to health issues, requiring a doctor’s note (receipts are not accepted).
-Extracurricular activities (clubs, circles, etc.) are not considered valid excuses.

Lateness:
-Students arriving within 5 minutes of the bell are not considered late.
-Students who arrive 20 minutes after class starts will be marked as absent.
-Two instances of lateness equal one absence.
-Chronic lateness policy: Students who habitually arrive within the 5-minute grace period will be addressed individually. Repeated patterns may result in penalties, such as a participation grade reduction.

Train Delays:
-Train delays are excused up to two times, with a physical confirmation paper provided.

Excused Absences Documentation
Valid Documentation for Excused Absences
・Excused absences are only granted for health-related issues, verified by a doctor’s note (診断書).
・Notes must explicitly mention the dates the student is unable to attend. Receipts or vague statements (e.g., "seen in clinic") will not be accepted.
・For train delays, students must provide an official delay certificate (紙の遅延証明書).

・Quizzes can only be taken during the scheduled class time.
・Quizzes taken without permission by students who are absent from class will not be counted toward the final grade.

・The student must provide a valid doctor’s note.
・An alternative assignment will be given (e.g. a handwritten summary or analysis of the missed section).
・Typed submissions will not be accepted for alternative quiz assignments to ensure originality.

2. Final Presentations:
If a student cannot present due to unavoidable circumstances, they must:
・Inform the instructor as soon as possible.
・Submit a video recording of their presentation within a specified timeframe (to be arranged with the instructor).
・The recording must meet the same standards as the in-class presentation.
