The main language used in this class is English. You should make an effort during class to communicate with the teacher and with other students in English as much as possible. However, you may also use Japanese when using English is especially difficult or when you want to clarify and/or confirm some information.
このクラスでは主に英語を使用します。授業中は先生や他の学生とできるだけ英語でコミュニケーションをとるように心がけてください。ただし、それが特に難しい場合や何か情報を確認したい時は日本語を使うこともできます。
授業の概要
SOCIAL DIVERSITY IN JAPAN.
This course explores the complexity of social diversity in Japan, with a focus on the experiences and histories of ethnic and social minority groups in Japanese society, and contemporary issues that they face. Whilst Japan is often portrayed as a culturally and ethnically homogeneous nation, the society itself includes a wide range of communities whose identities, traditions, and social positions contribute to Japan’s rich diversity.
Students will examine key minority populations, including Ainu, Ryukyuan/Okinawan communities, Zainichi Koreans, Burakumin, migrant workers, refugees, mixed-heritage individuals (hāfu), and others. The course aims to develop students’ ability to think critically about how minority groups are defined, represented, and treated within Japanese society.
By the end of the course, students will gain a deeper understanding of Japan’s social diversity and the ongoing challenges that minorities face, as well as efforts toward greater equity and inclusion.
Students will complete two research cycles, each culminating in a presentation.
In the first research cycle you will examine a historical or contemporary case related to a specific social or ethnic minority group in Japan. You will investigate the group’s background, key events shaping their social position, and the legal or policy frameworks that have influenced their treatment. You will evaluate how this group has been represented within Japanese society and how issues of identity, discrimination, or social inclusion have evolved over time.
The second research cycle will focus on the lived experiences and personal narratives of individuals belonging to minority communities in Japan. You will explore first-hand accounts that highlight everyday challenges and opportunities related to identity, cultural expression, community belonging, and social integration. This may include experiences with education, employment, language, cultural preservation, or interactions with local communities and institutions.
科目目的
The main objectives of this course are to help you
(1) use English to learn interactively with other students about issues relating to the theme of this course
(2) build your knowledge on topics and issues of interest to you
(3) share that knowledge interactively with other people
(4) develop your critical understanding of the world.
この授業の目的は以下の通りです。

（２）興味関心に基づくトピックや社会問題についての知識を養うこと
（３）他の受講生と学んだ知識を積極的にシェアできるようになること

Students will be expected to do 2 hours or more preparation outside class each week, including finding sources of information, reading and listening, note-taking, writing, and/or preparing for presentations, and submit assignments as required by the teacher.
受講生は、クラスの授業以外で毎週２時間以上の予習をすることが求められます。ここで言う予習とは、リーディング、リスニンング、情報や資料収集、ノートテ―キングやライティング、プレゼンテーション準備、又はその他担当教員が指定した課題などを指します。
授業時間外の学修に必要な時間数／週
毎週１回の授業が半期（前期または後期）または通年で完結するもの。１週間あたり１時間の学修を基本とします。

Requirements to pass this course: no more than 3 absences, active participation in class activities, weekly preparation outside class, and timely completion of assignments. The teacher will provide feedback on assignments, notes or other submitted materials. In class, you will also receive peer feedback from other students as you develop and share your research and projects through the semester.
フィードバックとして教員が課題やノート等、提出物にコメントを書くことがあります。授業中、学生はリサーチで得たものをクラスメイトと共有し、フィードバックしてもらうこともあります。

There is no designated textbook for this course. Rather, students will be able to experience different genre of written and oral discourse.
Additional handouts and class materials will be provided by the course instructor during the class and uploaded on Manaba.

Course participants are required to purchase an A 4 size notebook to be used in each class and for completing homework assignments.
