授業の概要

Building on philosophical and other abstract bases explored in Semester 1, the second semester of this Human Rights course shifts focus to real-world applications, challenges, and case studies from around the globe. Through readings, discussions, and projects, students will develop a nuanced understanding of how human rights are defined, protected, and contested in different contexts.
This Human Rights course is offered in both Semesters, and students may register for one or both semesters.

科目目的

This course is designed for students who are interested in understanding the principles, development, and impact of human rights in both historical and contemporary contexts. Students who take this course will gain a comprehensive foundation in the philosophical and legal origins of human rights, as well as insight into the major international documents and institutions that shape global human rights norms. Through critical analysis and discussion, students will explore the roles that governments, international organizations, and civil society play in promoting and protecting rights. In addition, they will develop the ability to assess current human rights challenges, engage in ethical reasoning, and articulate informed perspectives on complex global issues.

From taking this course, students will be able to:
-Identify and explain major human rights theories and principles.
-Evaluate the effectiveness of international human rights mechanisms.
-Apply human rights concepts to current global and local issues.
-Communicate informed perspectives through writing, presentations, and debates.
-Propose solutions to human rights challenges using interdisciplinary approaches.

- has lectured & tutored at LLB courses for Auckland law faculty;
- has a PhD in constitutional law & human rights (Univ. of Auckland, 2011);
