授業の概要
Law does not exist in isolation. It shapes our societies, and at the same time, societies shape the law. This course introduces students to the study of Law and Society, exploring the relationship between legal systems, social change, justice, and power — in Japan and internationally.
Through real-world examples, case studies, and contemporary legal debates, students will develop a deeper understanding of how law functions in society and how it affects daily life. The course is suitable for both Law students and non-law students who wish to think critically about legal issues.
Law and Society is offered in both the Spring and Autumn Semesters. Students may take one or both courses (Law and Society 1 & 2). Each semester covers distinct but complementary topics.
In the Spring Semester, we will begin with critical thinking and approaches to studying Law and Society. We will then examine themes such as justice and morality, criminal justice, harassment and discrimination, human rights, refugees and migration, climate change and the environment, and social justice. Where possible, we will explore other areas of interest to students. Current issues in Japan and globally will be incorporated into class discussion.
