授業の概要

This is an academic writing course. The aim of the course is to develop the ability to write clearly and concisely in English. Students will begin the course by studying the basics of paragraph writing, learning how to structure paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting sentences, and concluding sentences. They will gain practice in writing a variety of paragraph types and learn how to support their ideas with strong reasons and reliable evidence. Towards the end of the semester, they will be taught how to structure more extended pieces of writing in the form of short essays and reports. Students should exit the course with a clear understanding of the basics of academic writing.
英語表現演習1bでは、英語での明瞭かつ簡潔な文章作成能力の育成を目指す。この授業では、まず基礎的なパラグラフ・ライティングの技法を学び、またトピック・センテンス、支持文、結論文による段落構成の方法を学ぶ。そして、さまざまな種類のパラグラフ作成練習や自身の主張を支持するための根拠や論拠の用い方についての練習を行う。最終的には、より発展的なライティングの形態として、短いエッセイやレポートの作成方法も学習する。こういった段階的な学習を通して、アカデミック・ライティングの基礎について明確に理解する。

科目目的

In this course, students will learn how to write paragraphs and short reports in English. This will provide the basis for the academic writing skills they will need in their undergraduate studies.
英語表現演習1bでは、英語でのパラグラフ・ライティングや短いレポートの作成方法を学ぶことで、今後の大学生活において必要とされる英語アカデミック・ライティング作成のための基礎的能力を育成することを目的とする。

到達目標

Students should be able to:
1. Write various types of paragraphs in English.
2. Write a short report or essay consisting of multiple paragraphs.
3. Write persuasively using strong reasons and reliable evidence.
英語表現演習1bを通して、学生は以下のことが可能になることが期待される。
1．さまざまな種類のパラグラフを英語で書くことができる。
2．複数のパラグラフから構成される短いレポートやエッセイを書くことができる。
3．読み手を説得するための根拠や論拠を用いた文章を書くことができる。

Week 2: Quick write (QW) 1/The Environment continued short reading (Geothermal power in Japan)/Guidelines for writing on the environment/Practice paragraph writing 1
Week 3: QW 2/Introductory short reading: Space (About the Red Planet)/Guidelines for writing about space
Week 4: QW 3/Space continued short reading (Sputnik and early space probes)/Further guidelines for writing about space/Practice paragraph 2
Week 5: QW 4/Introductory short reading: History (Invention of the compass)/Guidelines for writing about history
Week 6: QW 5/History continued short reading (Development of the internet)/Practice paragraph 3/Introduction & guidelines to 1st writing test
Week 7: 1st writing test open time writing & submission
Week 8: QW 6/Introduction to multi-paragraph writing/Introductory short reading: Fine Art (Hokusai & ukiyoe)/Guidelines on writing about fine art
Week 9: QW 7/Fine Art continued short reading (Vincent van Gogh & Japonisme)/Further guidelines for writing about fine art (if needed)/Practice multi-paragraph writing 1
Week 10: QW 8/Introductory short reading: Education (Case of Clintondale High School)/Guidelines for writing about education
Week 11: QW 9/Education continued short reading (Terakoya in early Japanese education)/Further guidelines for writing about education (if needed)/Practice multi-paragraph 2/Introduction to 2nd writing test
Week 12: 2nd writing test open writing time & submission
Week 13: QW 10/Makeup 2nd writing test time/Final reflective writing on theme and topic interest & learning

Most of what we will do will be writing in-class, where you can write your thoughts, views, and feelings, and opinions on the themes we will cover and topics connecting to the themes. Some of it may be homework for you depending on time, but I will try to manage the time in-class so that you can keep your work mostly in-class.

While you might have to do some work for the writing outside of class time, I will give in-class time for you to prepare your writing.

Class participation in Quick Writes/In-class paragraph & multi-paragraph practice writing: 20%
Final reflective writing: 20%
1st writing test: 30%
2nd writing test: 30%

All students are required to have notebooks and USBs.

An attendance rate of 70% is required to pass for the participation grade. This means 11 out of 14 classes have to be attended, so there can be only three (3) unexcused absences.

Students whose attendance rate is below 70% will receive an E (failing) grade.
