授業の概要
This class offers an ethical framework to understand the theory and practice of humanitarian intervention. Through the classes, I will explain many ideas such as pacifism, just war theory, idealism, realism, cosmopolitanism and communitarianism, and deal with some cases of humanitarian intervention.
科目目的
The purpose of this course is 1) to understand the ethics of humanitarian intervention, 2) to analyze the relations among legal, political and military dimensions of interventions, and 3) to evaluate the theoretical and practical frameworks of humanitarian intervention.
到達目標
The goal of this class is to understand morality and reality of humanitarian intervention. Through the case studies, students are required to acquire critical way of thinking and your own perspective on humanitarian intervention.

2. History of ideas in international relations: sovereignty, order and justice
3. Realism and Idealism: power and morality
4. Normative theory of international relations: cosmopolitanism and communitarianism
5. War and Violence in international society
6. Human rights in international society
7. Stae sovereignty versus human rights: justice beyond borders?
8. Ethical frameworks: realism, pacifism and just war theory
9. Philosophical consideration: J. S. Mill’s "A Few Words on Non-Intervention"
10. Historical and Legal consideration: Case study Rwanda
11. Political matters?: Case study Kosovo
12.The Role of UN: "Responsibility to Protect"
13.Armed interventions in the name of "humanity": humanitarian war?
14.Review: Becoming a global "good Samaritan" as global citizens in global civil society

To prepare for the class, students are required to read the handouts and complete reading assignments. Also, prepare for the class discussion.
Moreover, after the class, rethink of the class discussion and have your opinion.
