授業の概要
The main aim of this course is to help students develop confidence in speaking about a range of current news topics. Through pair work, group work, research and group presentations students will practice communicating in English as they express themselves and learn about others.
科目目的
The objective of this course is to develop the confidence and the ability of students to communicate simply and effectively using spoken English. Students will practice communicative strategies using a variety of research from current news topics.

By the end of this course, students will:
・be able to express their ideas and opinions confidently
・be able to prepare and deliver short presentations
・practice effective listening strategies
授業計画と内容
Week 1: Orientation, Introductions, exchanging information
Week 2: discussion skill: agreeing/disagreeing
Week 3: explaining news story from notes; creating effective discussion questions; practicing agree/disagree
Week 4: discussion topic from recent news
Week 5: discussion skill: explaining why you disagree
Week 6: news discussion: students present recent topic in small groups and practice discussion skills
Week 7: discussion skill: asking clarifying questions
Week 8: discussion skill: giving your opinion based on evidence; discussion skills review for midterm test
Week 9: mid-term discussion skills test
Week 10: current domestic news discussion
Week 11: current international news discussion
Week 12: critical thinking and discussion skills review
Week 13: final discussion test
Week 14: course review
Week 15: review of discussion skills
Week 16: using assigned roles in discussions
Week 17: discussion skill: asking others' opinions
Week 18: discussion skill: giving opinions

Two-thirds of attendance is required for awarding course credits.
30 minutes late will be counted as absent.
Two times late (more than 15 minutes) will be counted as absent.
Lack of participation in class activities will be marked as absent.
Students are expected to bring writing paper and have internet access to conduct research and check manaba during class time.
Students are expected to participate in group work for each presentation and discussion.
There is a strict NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED policy. Assignments are due no later than the beginning of class on the due date.
Please make sure to check on manaba each week before class to see what handouts you may need to print out, etc. Additionally, if you are absent check manaba to see what the homework is, etc. so that you come to class prepared.
If you are on a sports team and will miss more than 2 classes a semester: you are required to make up missed in-class activities. Please talk with the instructor at the beginning of the semester to create a make-up plan.
