授業の概要
Theme: "Controversies, Conflicts, and Challenges in Different Societies.”
In this course you will learn about current issues relevant to Japan but also important to other societies as well. We will first examine the topic of immigration. You will be able to look abroad to see how other countries have managed this topic and if their experiences bode well for a similar implementation for Japan. You will examine the various ways immigration affects societies and its many benefits and possible challenges. Next you will study the effects of overtourism on the fabric of Japanese society and research its effects on other countries, especially in Europe. Later, you will also learn about a conflict particular to Japan and another conflict involving other foreign countries.
Each week, outside of class you will research an aspect of the topic and make notes from texts you have found on your own. In class you will work in pairs or small groups and share in English (and some Japanese if necessary) what you have learnt from your research. Through your discussions you will develop a better understanding of the issues. You will also write a weekly research journal about your learning and finally prepare a presentation using powerpoint or posters to present what you have
learnt to other students about each issue.
Spring course outline
After an initial introductory week, there will be two cycles focusing on immigration (Weeks 2-7), and overtourism (Weeks 8-13), followed by a review of the semester and self-assessment in Week 14. In each of the two cycles we will learn for one week about basic issues and concepts for understanding the topic, and then you will look for various types of texts to explore more about the topic on your own. In the final two weeks of each cycle, you will prepare and share a presentation to present your learning to other students.
