<概要>
Topics in Applied Linguistics: Language and Power, Culture, and Pragmatics
Language is used to enact real world change. In this class, lectures will introduce various frameworks of the relation between language and power—frameworks that can be used to understand how language is used around us in our daily lives. Beyond simply knowing and saying words, how effectively we engage in conversations is mediated by our pragmatic skills and social positions. This class starts with the big questions about language, moves to an exploration of the relation between language and power in terms of various frameworks, and concludes by introducing multiple concrete methods for analyzing language in real world settings. These methods are especially relevant to foreign language study and study abroad experiences, when students find themselves in situations where they need to engage in observation and analysis in order to improve their participation in conversations by following local norms which may be extremely different from those in their home language/culture.
