授業の概要
Theme: Social Compacts and Governments
Social compacts (or contracts) are formed when people in a society decide to give up certain individual freedoms in order to live together peacefully. They choose to follow rules or laws, which are administered by an authority, such as a king or a government, which also, in principle, promises to take care of and protect society. Such compacts have existed throughout history, but were more fully discussed and formalized in Europe in the 17th to 19th centuries. This course focuses on the development of social compacts around the world, and their importance with regard to stable systems of government based on the rule of law. The reasons why these compacts sometimes fail, what can happen when they do, and what a society can do to restore a social compact will also be explored. Topics that students may wish to investigate include social compacts in different societies around the world, including Japan; the influence of greed, corruption, populism, nationalism, racism, social protest, elections, healthcare and education; and social compacts under different systems of government.
What you will do in class each week:
In this course, there will be four cycles, two per semester, each of which will follow a certain theme. In each cycle we will first explore the theme through shared readings, conducted both in and outside class, after which students will do their own research into specific topics that interest them. This research will be shared with other members of the class, usually in groups of three or four. Each cycle will culminate in a final presentation, followed by reflection and feedback. Students will also keep a weekly, personal diary, where they will briefly document their weekly activities for the class. In this diary students can note down interesting things they have read or learned, comment about the lessons or any difficulties or problems they may have had, or discuss what they would like to do in coming weeks.
Spring course outline:
Cycle 1 will focus on "The Development of Social Compacts". In the first part of the course (Weeks 1 and 2), students will read about the development of social compacts in general. The focus will then shift to the development of the social compact within England (and later the UK), this being
generally thought of as the earliest successful modern democracy. Students will discuss the various readings in pairs or small groups, along with any difficulties arising from grammar or meaning. In Weeks 3-7, students will develop their own topics based on the theme, and research the development of social compacts in other parts of the world. Students will discuss their findings each week in small groups, and give a final presentation in Week 7. In Cycle 2, "The Failure of Social Compacts", we will explore the many reasons why social compacts can be broken. At times this is due to specific actions (or lack of action) taken by a particular government; at other times it may also be due to a failure on the part of those who are governed. The weekly schedule will be similar to that of Cycle 1.
Autumn course outline:
Cycles 3 (Weeks1-8) and 4 (Weeks 9-14) will follow a similar pattern of introductory readings
followed by individual research and presentations as that established in the first semester. The
theme for Cycle 3 will be "What Can be Done to Restore a Social Contract?", while Cycle 4 will
focus on "Social Contracts and Other Forms of Government".
