授業の概要
This is a first-semester course open to students of all years, 1 to 4.
This is an oral communication course; therefore, the focus is primarily on speaking, listening and discussion skills. Some writing will be required for planning, analysis and report

This course is positioned as a global subject in the curriculum.
The aims of this course are to:
-Improve your understanding of English in business and the market place
-Learn and practice the language and vocabulary of English in professional contexts
-Be capable of communicating in and understanding the language and style appropriate to business
到達目標
Session leader -- Students will learn how to lead the group in a training session of their own creation.
Based on a business-related movie of their choice, students will write a report to analyse and reflect on the film.
Students will make a 3-5 minute presentation discussing their major, areas of interest and career plans.
Portfolio -- students will produce a collection of all weekly assignments and course projects assembled into a single collection
授業計画と内容
Class plan for Spring Semester:
Week 1 Introductions
-Starting lesson with introductions to the course, course overview, course aims. Project 1 is a lesson about formal introductions for practical application in business and the workplace.
Week 2 Leisure
-Investigates routines, schedules and activities in leisure. Short readings and role-play scenarios guide students through discussions and evaluations of the benefits of various leisure activities.
Week 3 Problems
-Guides students through imagining various business cases in which problems may arise, providing support for different approaches to handling problems and arriving at satisfactory solutions.
Week 4 Travel
-While integrating the basics of the travel experience, this unit looks at a broader perspective of the travel experience by incorporating discussion of various challenges that may arise while traveling,
Week 5 Entertaining
-This unit gives students the opportunity to gain confidence using the language for reciving and replying to invitations (both formal and informal). Etiquette and polite language are also considered.
Week 6 Sales
-Discussing sales strategies, targets and accomplishments are an essential skill for operating in the marketplace. Different approaches to sales are considered through short case studies.
Week 7 People
-Using personality types as a way to explore the different types of people one encounters, this unit seeks to give an opportunity to both reflect on and gain a better understanding of people.
Week 8 Markets
-After consideration of the key markets in global business, students have the opportunity to explore the details and important features of developed or emerging markets of their choice.
Week 9 Companies
-This unit explores discussion of the various types of companies in the Japanese marketplace, then sets up consideration of the positives and negatives of globalisation for Japan.
Week 10 Web
-The range of impact of the internet is explored in discussions of social media, net business, emerging markets, and the rapidly changing context of the web in the marketplace.
Week 11 Cultures
-Global cultures, national cultures, workplace cultures are all under consideration in this unit. Students are challenged to engage beyond simplistic categories of similarities and differences.
Week 12 Jobs
-This unit takes a broad look at the various types of jobs in the marketplace, but gives special consideration to the students' own future goals and career plans for the type of job they prefer.
Week 13 Intercultural
-Intercultural intelligence (CQ) is this focus of this unit. Students look at different models for understanding and processing intercultural experiences toward cultivating intercultural expertise.
Week 14 Future
-Based on a premise of imagining and creating the future, students explore what changes may be on the horizon for themselves, the university, the community, the nation, the region, and the world.

Students are expected to prepare for classwork by reading texts, listening to the news or podcasts, watching films, and practicing conversations, dialogues and presentations.
Students are encouraged to seek out opportunities to speak English, such as with international students.
