授業の概要
This is a second-semester course open to students of all years, 1 to 4.
This is an oral communication course; therefore, the focus is primarily on speaking, listening and discussion skills.
Some writing will be required for preparation, planning and reports.
Course pace and content will be adjusted to adapt to the level and needs of the participants.

The aims of this course are to:
-Improve your understanding of English in business and the market place
-Learn and practice the language and vocabulary of English in professional contexts
-Be capable of communicating in and understanding the language and style appropriate to business
到達目標
Session leader -- Students will learn how to lead the group in a training session of their own creation.
Based on a business-related movie of their choice, students will write a report to analyse and reflect on the film.
Students will make a 3-5 minute presentation discussing their major, areas of interest and career plans.
Portfolio -- students will produce a collection of all weekly assignments and course projects assembled into a single collection

Class plan for Autumn Semester
Week 1 Introductions
-Starting lesson with introductions to the course, course overview, course aims. Project 1 is a lesson about formal introductions for practical application in business and the workplace.
Week 2 Work
-Language and discussion of various aspects of work and the working life are considered. Students have the opportunity to consider work-life and the experiences of work.
Week 3 Requests
-Making requests is an essential skill for operating in the marketplace, whether it is in placing orders, making specific additional requests, or seeking assistance for the completion of a task.
Week 4 At the hotel
-Beyond the basics of reservations, check-in and check-out, this unit gives students the opportunity to consider a full range of situations and challenges that may arise on a hotel stay.
Week 5 At the restaurant
-Beyond the basics of reservations, check-in and check-out, this unit gives students the opportunity to consider a full range of situations and challenges that may arise at a restaurant.
Week 6 Advertising
-This unit looks at current trends in advertising across various world markets. Particular focus is given to commercials, though other advertising formats are also considered.
Week 7 Staff
-The various types of staff in an organisation, along with a detailed look at different types of job-descriptions for staff in different settings, different roles, and different levels of organisations.
Week 8 Import/export
-For the Faculty of Commerce, an important area of focus is the topic of trade with a broad range of considerations for imports and exports. Various aspects of import/export are discussed.
Week 9 New business
-This unit looks at the development of new business at various levels of organisation, from local family enterprises, start-ups, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, and Trans-National Corporations.
Week 10 Technical
-Technical language is an essential part of business enterprises in many industries. Students are given the opportunity to learn and discuss technical language from a variety of settings.
Week 11 Japan
-As cultural ambassadors for Japan, students hone their skills being able to discuss key facts and data points of their choice regarding Japan, Japanese businesses, and the Japanese economy.
Week 12 Employment
-The employment process is changing. Students explore and discuss various types of employment, the emergence of flexible employment practices, and considerations for their own careers.
Week 13 Cultural communication
-This unit looks at Intercultural Intelligence (CQ) with a particular focus on oral communication challenges in the business setting. Students consider and discuss various situational case studies.
Week 14 Global skills
-The following are explored and discussed: communication & collaboration; creativity & critical thinking; intercultural competence & citizenship; emotional self-regulation & well-being; digital literacies.

Students are expected to prepare for classwork by reading texts, listening to the news or podcasts, watching films, and practicing conversations, dialogues and presentations.
Students are encouraged to seek out opportunities to speak English, such as with international students.
