授業の概要
Participating students will be given the opportunity to study in Sheffield, UK, and acquire knowledge of British culture, language, nature, society, etc.
Classes will be held with the main purpose of cultivating a rich international understanding through friendship with foreign citizens and students.
科目目的
The aim of this course is to help students develop their English language skills and make decisions about their learning and development so that they can have a successful and satisfying stay in Sheffield.
到達目標
Students will be able to:
1. Develop English listening comprehension abilities, as well as confidence and fluency in communicating and expressing ideas in English;
2. Plan, carry out, and review learning and research activities;
3. Build knowledge and understanding of issues to do with British society;
4. Explain knowledge and understanding clearly and fluently in English;
5. Think critically about issues affecting the city of Sheffield (and Yorkshire).
授業計画と内容
There are two main elements of this course:
1. Personal English Learning Development (PELD) and;
2. Research Projects.
In both, students will use English in pairs and small groups as much as possible.
1. Personal English Learning Development
Through the semester, students will do Personal English Learning Development (PELD) to improve their listening comprehension and communication skills. For this, students will do out-of-class listening and/or watching and reading about everyday life and society, news, and events in Britain, for example: youth issues, economic issues, education, immigration, sports, politics, the arts, as well as local issues to do with different communities and groups in Sheffield (and Yorkshire). In class each week, students will report back on what they have done for their PELD, as well as reviewing and planning the next steps in developing their PELD.
A 4-step cycle will be used for the PELD: planning, action, extension and sharing. 'PELD planning' means considering and deciding on a topic or interest area and searching and selecting materials to use. 'PELD action' means using the materials for PELD, taking notes, and asking and/or answering questions based on the materials used. 'PELD extension' means selecting and using additional materials about the current topic. 'PELD sharing' means explaining and discussing what has been learned with other members of the class.
2. Short Research Projects
Students will do two short research projects about different historical and/or contemporary issues in British society that interest them. Here are some examples:
What is the history of Sheffield and Yorkshire and the people who live or have lived there?
How did the city of Sheffield become established and grow?
In what ways is Yorkshire distinct from other parts of Britain?
Are the people of Yorkshire different from people in other parts of Britain and how have they been characterised?
What is Sheffield’s current political orientation and economic importance?
What is the importance of the two universities in Sheffield in terms of their effect on the city?
What areas of specialisation is the University of Sheffield well known for?
How important has Sheffield been in the areas of culture, arts and entertainment in recent years, and what cultural events are taking place in Sheffield in 2024?
What are the main issues and problems in Sheffield and Yorkshire in recent times?
How has Sheffield played an important role in sport over the last 150 years?
What is being done in Sheffield to promote the environment? What are the differences between the English spoken in Yorkshire and forms of English spoken in other parts of the UK?
Doing these Short Research Projects will enable students to develop a deeper and more critical understanding of particular social, political, legal, environmental, economic, scientific and cultural issues in Sheffield, Yorkshire and/or British society that interest them. Students will develop each Short Research Project over 5-6 weeks. In class students will explain and discuss their research in pairs and small groups. At the end of a research project, students will give a presentation to other students. For both projects, students will do online research and keep a weekly learning/research journal in English.
