授業の概要
Class overview
Before traveling, all short-term study abroad program III and IV participants will receive a lecture on culture shock and discuss information they have gathered in advance about the culture of the country/region they are going to, and what they will study during their stay prepare for travel and study abroad. After returning to Japan, participants with gather with students from the same destination and have group discussions and share presentations on their experiences. You will also submit a journal about your study abroad experience.

Purpose of Study
In preparation for English study at Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia), participants will consider how to prepare for studying abroad and what to keep in mind when participating in a study abroad program. Students will also deepen their understanding of Australia and Melbourne, including the history, geography, and climate.
At Swinburne University of Technology, students will have daily classes. In addition, students will use their free time to develop their English study and learn about Australian culture and home life.
After returning to Japan, participating students will share their experiences and what they learned while studying abroad, and consider how to utilize this knowledge in the future.

授業計画と内容
Lesson plan and content
■ Preliminary training 3 times:
1st session (April): Training procedure orientation
- Prepare your mindset and develop your purpose for participating in the program.
- Receive an explanation of the procedures for participating in the program.
2nd session (June): Preparation with ヘッセ先生 (1 class: 100 minutes)
- Meet and get to know other Swinburne program students
- Share and discuss (1) knowledge of Australia, (2) thoughts and concerns about study abroad, and (3) how to prepare for study abroad
- Learn about and prepare for culture shock
3rd session (July): Pre-departure orientation, class about culture shock
Learn the departure schedule, costs, preparations, local information, and emergency contacts.
■ On-site training (August to September):
Classroom lectures and extracurricular activities including the following themes are planned.
General English Class:
- grammar and vocabulary development
- supervised independent learning
- excursions and social activities
- academic writing for a variety of genres
- academic reading, listening and note-taking
- communication and interaction in the academic environment
- oral presentation and seminar discussions research and library techniques
Other extracurricular activities, some examples:
- Great Ocean Road tour
- Phillip Island
- Wilson’s Promontory Camp
- The Dandenong Ranges and Paffing Billy
- Sovereign Hill, Ballarat
- Grampians National Park Camp
■ Post-program class (September):
- Submit the English journal you kept during your stay in Melbourne
- Debrief your experiences in pairs, small groups and as a class using Japanese and English
- Give English presentations about what you learned about English study, about Australia, and about yourself
- Concluding comments and observations

Be sure to prepare and review thoroughly before participating in your Swinburne classes. Begin regular English study (listening, speaking, reading, writing) from the start of Spring Semester. Also, while studying at Swinburne, strive to learn as much as you can about the local culture and customs.

その他特記事項
参加学生は、現地での留学体験について3000字のレポートを提出して下さい。また、事前研修記入用プリントの「留学前」「留学後」の欄を記入したものと、留学中毎日書きためた英語のジャーナルを提出して下さい。
