授業の概要
This course provides a foundation for an economic analysis of consumer behavior, producer behavior, and markets. Microeconomics deepens your understanding of how our society works. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to answer the following questions using the tools that you acquire in this course.
Question 1: Oranges are a major part of Florida's economy. Scientists discover that eating oranges increases the risk of diabetes, and at the same time, a big hurricane hits Florida and seriously damages orange trees. How would these events affect the price of Florida oranges?
Question 2: Why do demand (supply) curves slope downward (upward)?
Question 3: Suppose that a government wants to reduce drug use and drug-related crime. So, the government spends billions of dollars to increase the number of federal agents devoted to the war on drugs. Does this drug interdiction decrease drug-related crime?
Question 4: Why can self-interest prevent people from maintaining cooperation when cooperation is in their mutual interest?
The major topics of inquiry include supply and demand, market efficiency, firm behavior in competitive markets, firm behavior in various markets such as monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly, externalities, and public goods and common resources.
