授業の概要

【Student’ Goal of the Series of Seminars】:
The ultimate goal for students is to write a graduation thesis (or graduation project). For this aim, they are expected to explore research topics in the area of consumer behaviour. They should formulate their own research question, review relevant literature by developing a reading list, select an appropriate research method, perform data collection and analysis, and summarise their findings in the thesis.

【Schedule of the Series of Seminars】:
Students who register for this seminar are required to enroll in Seminars II, III, IV, and V and submit a graduate thesis (or graduation project). The prospective outline for the upcoming seminar courses is as follows:

Seminar I: Learn the fundamentals of research methods (what is qualitative and quantitative research?) through lectures and group work.
Seminar II: Explore research topics within consumer behaviours, find research topics of interest (roughly, first draft), decide on the research approach, and develop a list of articles relevant to their topic. It consists of lectures, presentations, and discussions.
Seminar III: Based on Seminars I and II, write a research proposal with a schedule, and fix the research activities for the upcoming year. Advanced students may engage in preparation for data collection (e.g., develop a survey or interview protocol). This seminar can involve a combination of lectures and group work.
Seminar IV: Conduct data collection preparation (continued from Seminar III), run data collection, and perform data analysis. Students can also report on their research progress. The seminar would be a combination of lectures and individual consultations.
Seminar V: Complete data analysis, write up graduation thesis (or graduation project), and deliver the final presentation. This seminar encompasses research progress presentations and individual consultations.

【Important Note】:
・This series of seminar courses above is designed to develop students' teamwork and collaborative skills through a variety of group-based activities. "Developing collaboration skills" is a primary and essential goal of the seminar series. All students enrolled are expected to "actively participate in and contribute to the weekly assigned group work".

【What You Would Gain from the Seminars】:
・Foundation for success in international corporates.
・A basis if you are considering pursuing a master's degree overseas (especially "research degree" such as "Master of Philosophy") .

【Other Key Features】:
・Respecting each other equally is important. (If you respect me just like you respect your friend, feel free to call me “Toyo” casually)
・Value students’ positivity. For example, to other student’s presentations, try to turn any challenges or problems into constructive positive feedback.
・If you wish to proceed with your research faster, go ahead! (especially after Seminar II). I understand students are busy with job hunting or club activities etc, which are also important aspects of university life.
・Guest speakers from both academic and practical fields could be invited. They would provide academic knowledge (e.g., how to conduct research and write a paper) but also offer advice on job hunting, studying abroad, and working overseas. Such insights will be valuable even after entering the professional world.

科目目的

The ultimate goal of this seminar series (Seminars I–V) for students is to conduct their own research and write their graduation theses (or graduation project).
Specifically, the goal of Seminar 5 is to successfully submit a graduation thesis (or graduation project) in English. For this aim, students are expected to complete the data analysis, write their thesis, and submit the completed thesis by the given deadline. This seminar encompasses research progress presentations and individual consultations.

到達目標

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Apply a proper data analysis method to the collected data and report the findings to a supervisor and peers
2. Write (complete) a graduation thesis (or graduation project) following proper academic manners and structure.
3. (if needed) Deliver their final presentation about their research in English
4. Take responsibility for their assigned tasks and collaborate effectively with group members to achieve the group’s goals for the given problem.

[Important Note]: As mentioned in 5, "developing communication & collaboration skills in English" is a major goal of this seminar. All students enrolled in this course are expected to actively participate in and contribute to the weekly assigned group work.

レポート 60 Complete data analysis, write up thesis, and submit your graduation thesis (or graduation project) by the given deadline.
[Note]: Responding to the thesis revision is crucial. Failure to address it in a respectful manner (e.g., following the instructor's suggestions and submitting it by the deadline) may result in a potential loss of marks.
[Important]: Students who fail to submit the completed thesis by the deadline will not be guaranteed a passing grade for this course.
平常点 20 As described in the course objective section, class activities held in each session are the core of the course evaluation. For example, students can be assigned group work. For these activities, students will form small groups (3-4 people) to discuss a given topic. Through discussions with their group members, they will be required to propose group ideas or solutions on a group worksheet relevant to the lecture topic of the week. The quality of their work, active engagement, and participation attitude will be evaluated.

・The assignment items above could be changed depending on the class size or other reasons. In such instances, additional details will be announced by the instructor.
・Attendance will be taken in each class. Course credit will not be offered to those students with over five absences from this course.

The textbooks above are "recommended textbooks (参考書)" (i.e., not mandatory to purchase them). These textbooks can be helpful for students to clarify any uncertainties about research methods or to look up the meanings of keywords they come across during lectures but are unsure about. These would also be useful for students who aspire to become international marketing researchers or pursue an academic path (e.g., obtaining a Master’s or PhD degree). So, basically, you can use them to look up or reference specific terms or definitions, much like a dictionary.

Textbook 1 is a bit comprehensive. Good book, but it covers the relevant marketing research concepts comprehensively but also includes practical insights, such as how marketing research is conducted in real-world settings, particularly in the Australian context.
Textbook 2 is more compact and handy for students, focusing only on the essential aspects of marketing research. It is also a globally recognized book and might be especially helpful for beginners.

Textbooks 1 & 2 are sort of “How to book”. If you are unsure how to use SPSS at all, you may pick Textbook 2. This book describes how to use SPSS with visual screenshots of SPSS. And, if you are unsure about the basics of statical analysis largely, I may recommend reading Textbook 1. This book is also quite famous for beginner researchers. Textbook 3 is for those who want to learn statistical analysis a bit more carefully and seriously. This is a bit of a huge book; however, there are lots of useful & practical insights into it. Textbook 3 is sort of “bible” for researchers who conduct quantitative research (especially, causal research). Textbook 4 is challenging & is for those who want to conduct “mediation” & “moderation” analyses for your research. This book describes how to conduct “mediation” and “moderation” analyses practically using add-on software of SPSS, PROCESS. This book has been cited over 90,000 times! If you want to proceed to a master’s or PhD. You might pick this book.
