授業の概要
For much of human history, Earth’s population was largely rural, and consumption often occurred at a subsistence level. As a result, human-made environmental threats to the planet were minimal.
Over the past 250 years, however, things have changed dramatically. Not only has the world’s population grown rapidly, but the majority of people now live in urban areas. While urbanization is responsible for a number of improvements in our quality of life, it has also created a range of environmental and ecological crises.
This course examines the relationship between urban growth, human consumption, and environmental challenges. The course includes a historical examination of urbanization and the environmental problems of the post-industrial revolution period. Classes also cover a range of public policies that aim to address the environmental impact of urban development. Students will be expected evaluate the success or failure of these policies, and discuss their role in either minimizing or contributing to ecological damage in the future.
科目目的
The objective of this course is to encourage students to think critically about the relationship between urbanism and the environment. Industrialization and urbanization are responsible for many of the environmental problems we face today. At the same time, if we are able to effectively control these processes, they may hold the key to a more sustainable future.
During this course, students should become familiar with how cities form, the historical relationship between cities and the environment, and the way in which public policy has been and should be used to address environmental issues.
到達目標
By the end of the course, students should be able to understand and explain the following:
1) the relationship between urbanization and consumption
2) the environmental burden that results from urban development
3) the environmental opportunities that urban development provides
4) the various ways in which governments around the world have tried to make urban areas and urban development more sustainable
5) the environmental challenges that exist as the world’s population continues to urbanize.
