授業の概要
Course Description: Capitalism – Its Nature and Its Replacement
This course explores the systemic problems of the 21st century—including wealth inequality, global warming, and social alienation—through the combined lenses of Buddhist and Marxist philosophies. Students will examine how these two seemingly disparate traditions provide complementary insights into the nature of human suffering and the socio-economic structures that perpetuate it. The first half of the course focuses on "Right View," analyzing the internal and external causes of our current crisis. The second half, "Right Action," incorporates anarchist thought to investigate the transition toward a more rational, humane, and bottom-up post-capitalist society.
科目目的
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
• Analyze Core Philosophies: Explain the fundamental elements of Marxist, Buddhist, and anarchist thought as they relate to political economy and ethics.
• Identify Complementarity: Demonstrate how Buddhist and Marxist notions of the "self" and "interdependence" can mutually supplement each other to guide political praxis.
• Critique Capitalist Structures: Evaluate the role of capitalism in creating contemporary socio-economic problems, environmental degradation, and race or gender-based oppression.
到達目標
This course aims to help students analyze the corrosiveness of top-down power structures and the psychological effects of power on individuals and society. It further encourages them to investigate the viability of bottom-up organizational models, such as self-organizing cooperatives as replacements for existing state and market structures. Lastly, it teaches them to discuss how changing the self through mindfulness and the cultivation of virtues is necessary for effective social and political change.
