授業の概要

This is an introductory course in economic principles that help us understand how an economy functions in today’s society. The course introduces economic reasoning as well as techniques used by economists that can analyze and explain the complex modern economy. The course first deals with coordination mechanism in a market economy and its role, then devotes to the study of macroeconomics--the analysis of the economy at the aggregate level. We also discuss macroeconomic policy issues such as the financial crisis and budget deficit.

Students who successfully complete the following three criteria will receive a grade of B or higher.
1. Demonstrate basic understanding of economic theory.
2. Apply basic economic theories to understand current economic issues and evaluate policy options.
3. Understand and use quantitative data to analyze economic issues.

Before attending each class, you are expected to read the textbook and to look up economic terminologies in the chapters. You can learn not only the standard principles of economics, but also sophisticated ways of expressing things in English.

This course uses MindTap, a well-designed companion course software. It provides flashcards, exercises, self-test and many other useful resources that will help your understanding of the course contents. You are expected to solve many MindTap problem sets and quizzes.

You are expected to spend about eight hours of self-study each week in total.

This class follows 'BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Policy' of the Faculty of Global Management, and all participants should bring your own PC which fully satisfies minimum Faculty-recommended specifications (i.e., display screen-size etc). Note that the University prohibits any use of SNS during the lecture, and no course material can be distributed somewhere else outside the class under the copyright-protection, license agreement terms and conditions, and other restrictions.

Students who have never had the access code nor textbook before: Please purchase a copy of the textbook at the University Bookstore. Online MindTap course ware are bundled. Don't buy or use a second-hand copy. You cannot submit online homework assignments without MindTap course ware, which comes only with a new copy available at the bookstore.

Repeaters with previously used access code for Introductory Economics (10th edition of the textbook) that has not yet expired until the end of the semester do NOT have to buy again.

Repeaters with a record of having (expired) access code will be guided how to purchase the access code in the first meeting of the class. Without access to Mindtap, you will be unable to get the credit because all homework assignments will be on the Mindtap platform.

その他特記事項

Class attendance is mandatory, and absences without valid reasons are strongly discouraged. The course builds on cumulative learning. Without a solid foundation of basic concepts and consistent engagement, it can be extremely challenging to keep up with the course material. Just sitting in the class does not guarantee the credit.

It is important to regularly check your university email and Manaba for important notices and announcements. Communication is a key measure to resolve any arising problems. When writing an email, ensure that your email includes a clear and meaningful subject line, your full name, student ID, and a mention that you are referring to this class. Most importantly, write concisely and clearly explain the purpose of your communication. It is advisable to proofread your email in English before sending it.

The final grades are mainly based on scores (learning performance) from the homework assignments and the two exams. This class has a substantial amount of homework (after every chapter) in Mindtap that will often take a significant amount of time to complete. Do not miss any homework and check announcements for the deadlines in Manaba regularly.

Please note the date and time of the final (mid-term) exams (to be announced) and do not leave the town during exam dates. If students fail to show up in any of the exams, the students cannot get the credit for this course.

No make-up exams will be given.
Students had better contact the GLOMAC office in advance if students are about to be absent inevitably on the exams day. I might consider giving make-up tests for students who have received the official approval from the GLOMAC office for their absence on the exam day.
