授業の概要

この科目は、問題解決力(外国語とコミュニケーションの能力及びコンピューターを利用した統計・情報処理と分析の能力を用いて、科学技術及び社会の急速な変化に対応しながら、さまざまな問題を解決することができる)の修得に関わる科目です。
<概要>
This is an oral communication course with a focus on discussing various issues in English. The aim of this course is to encourage students to become critical thinkers who can use this ability to discuss important issues in English. The other main skill to be developed is the ability to find or generate information from a variety of sources and to present opinions related to that material.
For each topic covered in the course, students will do the following activities:
1. Ask and answer questions with a partner about the topic;
2. Look at the important vocabulary for the topic;
3. Listen to an audio clip about important issues related to the topic and identify main points and supporting details contained in the audio clip;
4. Read the transcript of the audio clip to check answers and practise pronunciation and intonation;
5. Talk again about the topic using more difficult and more contentious questions;
6. Focus on the language used in order to develop discussion skills;
7. Carry out a discussion-oriented extension task related to the topic;
8. Write a paragraph about the topic and share it with other students in the class.
9. Do the online homework activities related to the unit.
10. Do the online assessment activity related to the unit.
科目目的
The main focus of this class is speaking and listening. The main goals are:
1. To give students many opportunities to converse and discuss difficult topics with others.
2. To give students opportunities to make (informal) presentations.

1. Students will be comfortable exchanging opinions with others on difficult topics.
2. Students will be able to make clear and logical presentations without relying too much on written notes.

The schedule below is tentative and subject to change. If the English level of the students and their performance is high, it should be possible to cover six topics in the semester. If not, five topics will be covered.
Week 1. Course introduction & explanation, choosing topics, introduction to the textbook.
Week 2. Unit 1 - Vacations, Part 1 (Warm up discussion, vocabulary preparation, listening for main points and details, reading to check answers and to practise pronunciation, follow-up discussion.)
Week 3. Unit 1 - Vacations, Part 2 (Language focus for discussion skills, extension task, shared writing task, Study Centre homework for Unit 1.)
Week 4. Online assessment for Unit 1. Unit 2 - Movies, Part 1 (Warm up discussion, vocabulary preparation, listening for main points and details, reading to check answers and to practise pronunciation, follow-up discussion.)
Week 5. Unit 2 - Movies, Part 2 (Language focus for discussion skills, extension task, shared writing task, Study Centre homework for Unit 2.)
Week 6. Online assessment for Unit 2. Unit 3 - Dating, Part 1 (Warm up discussion, vocabulary preparation, listening for main points and details, reading to check answers and to practise pronunciation, follow-up discussion.)
Week 7. Unit 3 - Dating, Part 2 (Language focus for discussion skills, extension task, shared writing task, Study Centre homework for Unit 3.)

Students will required to do homework, mainly in the form of completion of follow-up exercises in the 'Study Centre’ website and sometimes research of the topics covered in the class. The homework will be important in helping students to be prepared for the assessment in following class.

Absences and lateness will result in a reduction in the total percentage. There is an absence limit of 30% of classes and lateness limit of 20 minutes.
