授業の概要

For much of human history, Earth’s population was largely rural, and consumption often occurred at a subsistence level. As a result, human-made environmental threats to the planet were minimal.

Over the past 250 years, however, things have changed dramatically. Not only has the world’s population grown rapidly, but the majority of people now live in urban areas. While urbanization is responsible for a number of improvements in our quality of life, it has also created a range of environmental and ecological crises.

This course examines the relationship between human consumption, urban growth, and environmental challenges. The course begins with a background discussion of the most pressing environmental problems of the present day. It then provides a historical examination of urbanization, followed by an overview of the evolution of environmental problems during the post-industrial revolution period.

科目目的

The objective of this course is to encourage students to think critically about the relationship between urbanism and the environment. Industrialization and urbanization are responsible for many of the environmental problems we face today. At the same time, if we are able to effectively control these processes, they may hold the key to a more sustainable future.

During this course, students should become familiar with how cities form, the historical relationship between cities and the environment, and the way in which public policy has been and should be used to address environmental issues.

By the end of the course, students should be able to understand and explain the following:

1) the relationship between consumption and environmental stress
2) the technologies that have been developed to address contemporary environmental problems, and the limitations of these technologies
2) the relationship between urbanization and consumption
3) the way in which the urban environmental problems (and solutions) have changed over time
4) the environmental challenges that exist as the world’s population continues to urbanize
