授業の概要
<学位授与方針と当該授業科目の関連>
この科目は、問題解決力(外国語とコミュニケーションの能力及びコンピューターを利用した統計・情報処理と分析の能力を用いて、科学技術及び社会の急速な変化に対応しながら、さまざまな問題を解決することができる)の修得に関わる科目です。
<概要>
This is a listening and speaking course based on current issues in society. Students will be required to listen to several authentic listenings related to the theme of the unit, plus watch a short video. Students will then, speak in pairs or groups, discuss ideas and give opinions using the notes they have taken. Vocabulary needed to understand the unit is introduced throughout the unit along with pronunciation exercises. The final exercise is to deliver individual or group presentations related to the topic of the unit. Students are expected to spend some time out of class hours preparing the presentations. Research is encouraged.

To help students to get to the point where they are comfortable exchanging opinions with others on relatively difficult topics
To enable them to make clear and logical presentations without relying too much on written notes
To bring their reading and writing skills to intermediate (collegiate) level.

授業計画と内容
There are 8 units in the book. One unit will take about 3 lessons. Units 1-4 will be studied in Semester 1.
Lesson 1: Introduction. Explanation of assessment, and how the book works: what is expected of a 2nd year university student doing pair work , group work, debate, research and presentations. Each student is expected to bring the book to the first lesson.
Lesson 2: Unit 1: CREATING CONNECTIONS. (Urban studies) Discuss the picture that introduces the theme. Vocabulary tasks in preparation for video, analyze an infograph. Listening skill - listen for main ideas and detail. Follow up discussion. Grammar - gerund and infinitive.
Lesson 3: Prepare to Listen exercises. Vocabulary, analyze another infograph. Critical thinking - brainstorm solutions. Listening skill - listen for main ideas and detail. Pronunciation - word stress. Presentation - present a community plan to help people connect - students start planning their presentations and finish for homework ready to present next lesson. Plus Vocabulary Expansion Activities at end of book for homework.
Lesson 4: Deliver presentations. Reflect on skills achieved in unit 1 checklist.
Lesson 5: Unit 2: LANGUAGE AND CULTURE. (Linguists) Discuss the picture that introduces the theme. Prepare to Listen - vocabulary tasks, analyze infographs. Critical thinking - support your opinions. Listening skill - listen for signal words. Pronunciation - stress in words with suffixes. Discussion on second language learning.
Lesson 6: Continue discussion on second language learning. Why learn another language. Prepare to Watch - vocabulary, discussion - how language and culture are related. Video - comprehension questions and discussion. Grammar - Future real conditions. Discuss proverbs. Speaking skill - how to take turns in a discussion. Brainstorm ideas for presentation of a proverb. Plus Vocabulary Expansion Activities at end of book for homework.
Lesson 7: Give presentations in small groups in class. Follow up discussion. Reflect on skills achieved in Unit 2.
Lesson 8: Unit 3. FACT OR FICTION. (Media studies) Prepare to Listen - vocabulary. Critical thinking - evaluate data. Discuss the issue of fake news. Listening skill - listen to numbers. Pronunciation - rhythm and stress.
Lesson 9: Prepare to Watch - Vocabulary Analyze infograph about fake news. Watch video - evaluate tips to avoid fake news. Speaking skill - ask for and give clarification. Grammar - simple past and past continuous. Presentation of a fake news story or survey preparation. Plus Vocabulary Expansion Activities at end of book for homework.
Lesson 10: Deliver presentation or survey in class. Reflect on skills achieved in Unit 3.
Lesson 11: Unit 4. WHY WE MAKE ART. (Art) Prepare to Watch - Vocabulary. Discussion on street art. Listening skill - take notes using "wh" question chart. Grammar - connecting words for reasons and results. Critical thinking - analyze motivations.
Lesson 12: Prepare to Listen - Vocabulary. Analyze an infograph. Discuss art careers. Listening skill - listen for main ideas and detail. Pronunciation - reduced structure words. Prepare poster presentation of a piece of art work and artist. Finish preparation for homework. Plus Vocabulary Expansion Activities at end of book for homework.
Lesson 13: Students deliver poster presentations. Reflect on skills achieved in unit 4.
Lesson 14: Speaking test. Review.

Since every class involves pair work and group discussion, students should make an attempt to attend every lesson. 80 % attendance is required to pass the course. Every student must buy the textbook.
