<概要>
Environmentalism 2 will focus on indigenous peoples and how they have become leaders against corporate environmental destruction; it will be more on the International Environmental Movement (versus the US in the first semester) and more on what the world is doing today to address issues of Climate Change and Pollution. We will focus a little more deeply on topics introduced the first semester: the Rio Declaration (1992), the Kyoto Protocol (1997), the Oslo Declaration (2006); the Earth Summit (2012). The topics we will consider: 1) The Rise of Severe Weather Patterns; 2) Humanity’s Special Place & Responsibility; 3) Humanity’s Disconnection with Nature; 4) The Philosophy of Limitless Growth; 5) Climate Change/Earth Destruction/Species Extinction/Political Paralysis; 6) How to Live Sustainably; 7) Intelligent Design/Reducing Human Footprint; 8) The Way Forward. I hope students will gain a deep sense of what the Environmental Movement is doing and how ordinary people are contributing to it.

到達目標
By the end of the course, students will have improved their ability to read texts in a logical, analytical, and comprehensive way. They will have read a variety of types and genres of texts relevant to SDGs, and will understand the meaning of SDGs and their importance in the modern world.
The Second Semester will take us into the values of indigenous peoples, especially in North America and the Amazon, to understand how their values have become part of the modern environmental movement, with its concept of Mother Earth.
We will also consider such challenges as Climate Change Denial, which has been pushed by the huge energy companies, like ExxonMobile, to cast doubt on the science through FRONT organizations, such as the Heartland Institute. This really has stalled advances in addressing climate change, unfortunately.
Goals by Point:
To engage with vocabulary, listening, and grammar exercises
To engage with articles by independent scholars
To study important moments of environment pollution in Japan, USA, and India
To engage with discussion assignments where they have to offer informed opinions
To engage in internet reports websites on important historical moments
To encourage students to engage in independent research
To have students participate in group discussions to have students engage deeply in such topics as Endangered Species, Environmental Law, and Green Economic Growth.
To have students do independent research on various indigenous peoples, especially those in the Amazon regions
To have students do independent research on the reasons for environmental protests
To have students do independent research on such environmental groups as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth

授業時間外の学修の内容(その他の内容等)
Every other class we will have a discussion (every two weeks). This is for you to develop your opinion and perhaps to debate or at least to compare opinions with other students in your group. Every other week you will also have internet- assignments, for the necessary background information to help you develop an opinion and listening assignments. In listening to a variety of accents, some from people whose native language is not English, you will first learn to get the general meaning of spoken English, though you may not understand every word.
Most of your work for the class will be done outside of class, to prepare for the class, especially for the discussions (I will provide the websites). Every other week as many times as necessary as you follow the instructions in your homework pages for the Vocabulary, Getting Main Ideas, Listening For Details, Fill In Blanks, Final Details, Internet Research, and Things To Talk About.
Plan to spend an hour on the homework each week doing the homework.
