授業の概要
<学位授与方針と当該授業科目の関連>
この科目は、問題解決力(外国語とコミュニケーションの能力及びコンピューターを利用した統計・情報処理と分析の能力を用いて、科学技術及び社会の急速な変化に対応しながら、さまざまな問題を解決することができる)の修得に関わる科目です。
<概要>
This is a listening and speaking course based on current issues in society. Students will be required to listen to several authentic listenings related to the theme of the unit, plus watch a short video. Students will then, speak in pairs or groups, discuss ideas and give opinions using the notes they have taken. Vocabulary needed to understand the unit is introduced throughout the unit along with pronunciation exercises. The final exercise is to deliver individual or group presentations related to the topic of the unit. Students are expected to spend some time out of class hours preparing the presentations. Research is encouraged

To help students to get to the point where they are comfortable exchanging opinions with others on relatively difficult topics
To enable them to make clear and logical presentations without relying too much on written notes
To bring their reading and writing skills to intermediate ( collegiate) level.

授業計画と内容
There are 8 units in the book. One unit will cover about 2 lessons. Units 5-8 will be taught in Semester 2.
Lesson 1: Unit 5. EXPLORERS. (Travel/History) Prepare to Listen. Vocabulary. Discuss what it means to be an explorer. Critical thinking - preview a listening. Pronunciation - Final Intonation. Discuss past and present explorers.
Lesson 2: Prepare to Watch. Vocabulary. Discuss exploration to the Antarctica. Watch video. Listening skill - listen for time words. Grammar - present perfect. Vocabulary Expansion Activities at the end of the unit for homework.
Lesson 3: Speaking Skill - asking follow up questions. Students set up a Roleplay - mock interview with an explorer. Reflect on skills achieved in unit 5 and fill in checklist.
Lesson 4: Unit 6: THE VALUE OF MEMORY (Neuroscience) Prepare to Listen - Vocabulary. discuss how memories affect behaviour. Listening skill - distinguish facts from opinion. Pronunciation - focus words. Critical thinking - categorize ideas. Discussion - relate ideas about memory to your life.
Lesson 5: Prepare to Watch. Vocabulary. Discussion on moods and depression. Watch video. Discussion - debate ideas - consider reason for removing memories. Debate ideas about changing memories. Speaking skill - present arguments for and against. Grammar - unreal present and future conditional. Vocabulary Expansion Activities at the end of the unit for homework.
Lesson 6: Students conduct surveys on any area they choose related to the theme of the unit and present in small groups. Reflect on skills achieved in unit 6 and fill in checklist.
Lesson 7: 21st century skills. Discuss the 12 21st century skills. Students prepare individual flipgrid presentation explaining why they want to develop that particular skill over the next 12 months. Students post flipgrid for homework.
Lesson 8: Unit 7: GET CREATIVE (Psychology) Prepare to Watch. Vocabulary. Discuss how boredom and creativity are related. Watch video. Discussion of main ideas. Grammar - ing forms. Critical thinking - question ideas.
Lesson 9: Prepare to Listen. Vocabulary. Evaluate an infograph. Listening skill - note taking - numbers and time periods. Pronunciation - connected speech. Discuss challenges to be more creative.
Lesson 10: Prepare and conduct surveys on any topic related to the theme of the unit. Speaking skill - present results. Reflect on skills achieved in unit 7 and fill in checklist.
Lesson 11: Unit 8: IS THERE ANY GOOD IN GAMING? (Technology) Prepare to Listen. Vocabulary. Discussion - consider reasons for joining a club or team. Listening skill - use a T chart to take notes. Critical thinking - evaluate pros and cons. Grammar - infinitive of purpose.
Lesson 12: Prepare to Watch. Vocabulary. Analyze info graph. Discuss players and types of video games. Watch video. Discuss website related to video. Pronunciation - thought groups. Students work on presentations in class based on any aspect of the unit they were interested in.
Lesson 13: Deliver presentations. Speaking skill - use signal words and phrases. Reflect on skills achieved in Unit 8 and complete check list.
Lesson 14: Speaking Test. Course Review and confirmation of achievement goals.

As every class involves pair work and group discussion, students should make an attempt to attend every lesson. 80% attendance is required to pass the course.
