<概要>
Global Events 2: International NPOs and Globalization will focus on the genocide in Africa (Rwanda) that happened in 1994. Since this tragedy shows us how various countries and international agencies work (or don’t work), we will be considering the following themes: "The Meaning of Genocide," "UN Peacekeeping" "The Role of the International Community in Preventing Genocide," and "The International Red Cross and Red Crescent," and "The UN Tribunal For Genocide," along with such NPOs as "Doctors Without Borders," "The Clinton Foundation," and "Survivors Fund." Most of class time will be reviewing your homework assignments, which are based on the documentary The Ghosts of Rwanda, from the American Public Broadcasting Corporation, with discussion exercises based on the film Hotel Rwanda (2004). In class, we will further explore these themes with some of the following films: Beyond the Gates (2005), 100 Days (2001), and Cry Freedom (1987). In addition, you will learn songs from famous concerts from South Africa and Zimbabwe that were dedicated to democratic change in Africa.

授業時間外の学修の内容(その他の内容等)
Every other class we will have a discussion (every two weeks). This is for you to develop your opinion and perhaps to debate or at least to compare opinions with other students in your group. Every other week you will also have internet- assignments, for the necessary background information to help you develop an opinion and listening assignments. In listening to a variety of accents, some from people whose native language is not English, you will first learn to get the general meaning of spoken English, though you may not understand every word.
Most of your work for the class will be done outside of class, to prepare for the class, especially for the discussions. Please make a copy of the video segments (I will provide the websites) every other week as many times as necessary as you follow the instructions in your homework pages for the Vocabulary, Getting Main Ideas, Listening For Details, Fill In Blanks, Final Details, Internet Research, and Things To Talk About.
Plan to spend an hour on the homework each week.
