授業の概要
Class activities will include pair work, team work, information exchange and general discussion activities. There will be grammar review, and each class will introduce new vocabulary which students will need to learn in order to make progress in the course.
科目目的
The purpose of this course is to develop and improve students’ ability to communicate information about their lives, activities, environments and interests in more natural English, without using Japanese to English translation.

- advantages, disadvantages
- what was happening in the past

授業計画と内容
First Semester (14 classes)
1.Course goals and policies; introductions, how the class will be conducted.
2. Unit 1 A (Education): "I'm taking six classes", routines, expressing prohibition, office rules, information exchange
3. Unit 1 B (Education, continued): "You're not allowed to", prohibition vs. obligation - pair work/discussion
4. Unit 1 C (Education, continued): "My Behavior", feelings and reactions - discussion/information exchange about personal behavior and class rules
5. Unit 1 D (Education, continued): "Education Controversy" advantages/disadvantages, comparison of behavior, class discussion
6. Unit 2 A (Personal Stories): describing past events (simple past vs. past continuous), announcing news, group story about a past event
7. Units 1 and 2 Videos
8. Unit 2 B (Personal Stories, continued): "Guess what?", opening and closing a conversation, participial adjectives, description of simultaneous past actions (guided conversation)
9. Unit 2 C (Personal Stories, continued): "I was really frightened!", telling personal stories, expressing reactions (speaking exercise)
10. Unit 2 D (Personal Stories, continued): "How embarrassing!", description of embarrassing moments, more personal stories, pair and small group work
11. Unit 3 A (Style and Fashion): "Fashion trends", Asking about and describing fashions, past and present, defining relative clauses, interviews
12. Unit 3 B (Style and Fashion, continued): "Does this come in...?", locations, relative clauses, fashion statements, purchases, conversation: comparison of styles
13. Unit 3 C, 3D: (Style and Fashion, continued): "The latest look", product descriptions, alternatives, role play of shopping situation;"Views on fashion", opinions about fashion (past and present), student interviews and discussion of results

1. First semester review and Unit 3 video as review
2. Unit 4 A: (Interesting lives): "Have you ever been on TV?", ask and talk about life experiences, present perfect, checking meaning, interview about experiences
3. Unit 4 B: (Interesting lives, continued) "What I mean is...", check and clarify meaning, present perfect vs, simple past, information exchange about experiences never had
4. Unit 4 C: (Interesting lives, continued), "Life experiences", details of experience, checking and clarifying (continued), information exchange about unusual habits
5. Unit 4 D: (Interesting lives, continued), "What a life!", memorable experiences, student interviews about memorable experiences
6. Unit 5 A: (Our world), "Older, taller and more famous...", compare human made structures, comparatives, expressing disbelief, conversation about comparison of different places
7. Units 4 and 5 Videos
8. Unit 5 B: (Our world, continued), "I don't believe it!", express disbelief, information gap activity about impressive places
9. Unit 5 C: (Our world, continued), "World geography", say that they don't know something, superlatives, information exchange about human made structures
10. Unit 5 D: (Our world, continued), "Natural wonders", describe geographical features and natural wonders, discussion about experiences in different places and advice for foreign visitors
11. Unit 6 A & B: (Organizing your time), "A busy week", ask and talk about future plans, present tenses used for future, offering to take a message, information exchange about upcoming plans
12. Unit 6 C: (Organizing your time, continued) "Can I take a message?", taking/leaving messages, role play with phone messages
13. Unit 6 D: (Organizing your time, continued) "Can you do me a favor?", requests, promises, offers, role plays with requests, promises, offers; use of "will, could you, would you"
