授業の概要
This course links linguistic theory to language processing. As the fundamental units of analysis in phonology are mental representations that correspond to sounds, including segments, syllables, stress, and intonation contours, we begin with a detailed description of the sounds of speech. This will include the analysis of acoustic characteristics including duration, intensity, pitch (fundamental frequency), formant transitions, stop bursts, and Voice-Onset Time (VOT). We will then study the theoretical characterization of these speech properties as aspects of lexical representations stored in memory. This will bring us to the the core of language: the arbitrary association of sound(s) and meaning. From there we will study how lexical items are accessed in a variety of language tasks, including both comprehension and production, as well as how phonological processes interact with those mechanisms using experimental tasks such as lexical decision, auditory discrimination, item identification, phoneme monitoring, oddball repetition, and others as time permits.
科目目的
This course introduces students to experimental approaches to the study of phonological knowledge. Linguistic theory provides a framework for understanding what a person knows when he or she knows the sound system of a language. This includes the nature of phonological representations stored in the lexicon as well as operations that lead to a range of phenomena, including neutralization of contrast, allophonic variation, augmentation, and truncation, among others.
到達目標
Students will learn about a number of experimental methods for examining phonological processing in both speech production and speech perception, including how to implement them using various computer software applications. Many of these methods can be extended to the study of other aspects of linguistic processing, such as morphology, syntax, or pragmatics. No prior experience with computing is required.
