The language used in class is English, but explanations etc. will also be given in Japanese, if necessary.
授業で使用する言語は英語ですが、必要に応じて日本語での説明等も行います。

授業の概要

In this reading and discussion course, we will use online materials from Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international public broadcaster, to learn about a variety of topics related to German society and then discuss them in class to practice listening, reading, writing and discussion skills.
The online materials will be based primarily on videos that are part of Deutsche Welle’s Euromaxx news program. For each topic, we will watch an online video, read and translate the transcript together, and then discuss aspects of each topic in pairs or groups. Two classes will be devoted to each topic.
Your progress will be monitored regularly with review quizzes on the vocabulary covered in class, and you will be asked to submit your opinions on the discussion topics in advance via the course’s Manaba page. In addition, at the end of each term, your level of achievement will be checked by a test on the vocabulary review quizzes and the content of topics covered during that term.

Reading English texts on various topics in the fields of culture, society and politics related to Germany, as well as discussing and doing additional research on these topics with others in English.

You must revise important vocabulary and expressions of the texts covered in class.
You must submit your opinions on discussion topics and other assignments online and prepare for discussions.
At the end of each term, you must revise and prepare for the written test (achievement checking).
Finally, be sure to check the Manaba page of the course and your official university e-mail account frequently to avoid missing important course news!

The Manaba page of the course will be used to augment face-to-face classes (learning materials, course news, online assignments, forum for questions/comments etc.)
Also, Respon will be used for real-time in-class surveys related to the topics of the course.
Students are required to bring an internet-enabled device (notebook, tablet, smartphone, etc.) to class, to be able to participate in the Respon surveys, access online language resources and do some online research on the topics covered in class. Details will be provided during the orientation session in the first class of the course.
