授業の概要
In this course, students will learn the basics of English phonetics, phonology, and pragmatics in order to improve their pronunciation and communicative effectiveness.
This course is student-centered in that half of the class is based on students’ presentation. In each class, students who present the relevant part for the day will summarize and explain the gist of the part, with the guidance of the instructor. Other students’ understanding will be checked with a comprehension quiz as well as exercises prepared by the instructor. In addition, students will also learn the basics of phonetics/phonology and improve their pronunciation through exercises given by the instructor.
科目目的
Part of a two-course series, along with Grammar for Communication, this course draws on the study of linguistics to help students develop communication skills in English. Building on the centrally important relationship in linguistics between sound and meaning, the course teaches students about aspects of language use that lie beyond the grammar and vocabulary and applies principles of English phonology and English pragmatics to English communication.
到達目標
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
(a) improve their pronunciation through an understanding of distinctive features, syllables, stress, and intonation;
(b) improve communicative effectiveness through an understanding of deixis, presupposition, implicature, speech acts and politeness; and
(c) apply their own theoretical understanding to practical experience.
