授業の概要
In this course, students will learn (a) the process of academic writing (e.g. pre-writing, draft writing, editing, revising, and proofreading) and (b) how to write different types of paragraphs (e.g. opinion, comparison/contrast, and problem/solution paragraphs). They will also learn (c) how to express their ideas effectively in a logical manner, paying attention to unity and coherence.
Each class will begin with the introduction of the relevant writing techniques, which will be followed by exercises to allow students to familiarize themselves with the techniques. Students will also be required to write paragraphs with the learned techniques both in and out of class.
科目目的
This course aims to develop writing skills that will lead to academic success through various exercises, writing activities and discussion with classmates. Students will have opportunities to write various types of paragraph that commonly occur in academic contexts, and to apply what they have learned about paragraphs to essay writing.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
(a) write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to one’s interests;
(b) write an essay or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view; and
(c) construct a chain of reasoned argument.

Week 3: The structure and the development of a paragraph (Unit 2 and Unit 3)
Week 4: Opinion Paragraphs (Unit 4)
Week 5: Comparison/contrast paragraphs (1): Similarities and differences (Unit 5)
Week 6: Comparison/contrast paragraphs (2): Advantages and disadvantages (Unit 5)
Week 7: Paragraphs about graphs and charts (1): Bar graphs and pie charts (Unit 6)
Week 8: Paragraphs about graphs and charts (2): Line graphs (Unit 6)
Week 9: Problem/solution paragraphs (1): A problem paragraph (Unit 7)
Week 10: Problem/solution paragraphs (2): A solution paragraph (Unit 7)
Week 11: Problem/solution paragraphs (3): Peer-editing and revising
Week 12: Essay writing (1): The structure of an essay and outlining an essay (Unit 8 and Unit 9)
Week 13: Essay writing (2): Introductions and conclusions (Unit 10)
Week 14: Essay writing (3): Unity and coherence (Unit 11) / Peer-editing and revising
