授業の概要
The main aim of this course is to help students develop confidence in speaking about a range of current news topics. Through pair work, group work, research and group presentations students will practice communicating in English as they express themselves and learn about others.
科目目的
The objective of this course is to develop the confidence and the ability of students to communicate simply and effectively using spoken English. Students will practice communicative strategies using a variety of research from current news topics.

By the end of this course, students will:
・be able to express their ideas and opinions confidently
・be able to prepare and deliver short presentations
・practice effective listening strategies

Week 1: Orientation, Introductions, exchanging information
Week 2: creating notes from news articles
Week 3: explaining news story from notes; creating effective discussion questions
Week 4: choosing a topic to present on as a group
Week 5: Preparation for mid-term presentations; includes planning, research
Week 6: Preparation for mid-term presentations; includes practicing presentation and creating effective discussion questions
Week 7: mid-term presentations and discussion
Week 8: mid-term presentations and discussion
Week 9: choosing and beginning research for 2nd presentation topic
Week 10: Preparation for final presentations; includes planning and research

Two-thirds of attendance is required for awarding course credits.
30 minutes late will be counted as absent.
Two times late (more than 15 minutes) will be counted as absent.
Lack of participation in class activities will be marked as absent.
Students are expected to bring writing paper, dictionary (paper or electronic) and have internet access to conduct research and check manaba during class time.
Students are expected to participate in group work for each presentation and discussion.
There is a strict NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED policy. Assignments are due no later than the beginning of class on the due date.
Please make sure to check on manaba each week before class to see what handouts you may need to print out, etc. Additionally, if you are absent check manaba to see what the homework is, etc. so that you come to class prepared.
