Communication with the teacher will be in English in order to improve your listening skills.

授業の概要

This course will provide students with the necessary skills and vocabulary for expressing their opinions, thinking critically, and discussing various topics. Students will build listening skills and active vocabulary, learn different communication strategies, and practise explaining and presenting their points of view and results of their research.
During the first semester we will work with several topics, 3 – 4 weeks per topic. Each topic will consist of some reading and key vocabulary tasks, listening, discussion points for pair and group work, and opinion-based tasks.
During the second semester we will work on several projects, which will help students further develop listening, research, and communication skills.

1. To explore communication strategies for sharing and discussing information and opinions on various contemporary and thought-provoking topics.
2. To learn important communication skills.
3. To improve spoken fluency and listening comprehension.
4. To develop critical thinking and research skills.
5. To develop learner autonomy.

2) Take effective notes, explain and discuss them in groups;
3) Express opinion, agree & disagree, compare & contrast, explain cause & effect;
4) Effectively conduct simple discussions;
5) Prepare and present various projects and reports.

Semester 1:
1. Introducing course materials and course requirements; students’ self-introductions.
2. Useful vocabulary for class work. Email English. Note-taking for speaking.
3. Skills for re-telling stories, articles, and reporting events; speaking and writing from notes.
4. Speaking from notes. Follow-on questions and showing interest.
5. Topic 1: listening, key vocabulary, and discussions.
6. Topic 1: report based on an interview.
7. Topic 1: group presentations based on homework.
8. Topic 2: vocabulary and discussions. Persuasive strategies in speaking and writing.
9. Topic 2: agreeing & disagreeing; discussion skills.
10. Topic 2: Group discussions based on homework.
11. Topic 3: vocabulary and discussions. Making suggestions and giving advice.
12. Topic 3: interviews and pair work based on class materials.
13. Topic 3: Basic research skills: making mind-maps and planning a short talk.
14. Topic 3: Presenting projects in small groups.

Semester 2:
1. Vocabulary for describing events; interviewing classmates.
2. Reports based on interviews: group presentations.
3. Project 1, week 1: survey questions and interviews.
4. Project 1, week 2: analysing surveys and creating visual support.
5. Project 1, week 3: explaining and discussing surveys.
6. Project 1, final week: presenting and discussing projects (group work).
7. Project 2, week 1: choosing and discussing topics.
8. Project 2, week 2: explaining and discussing researched information.
9. Project 2, week 3: mind-mapping and outlining.
10. Project 2, final week: presenting and discussing projects (group work).
11. Project 3, week 1: choosing and discussing topics.
12. Project 3, week 2: explaining and discussing researched information.
13. Project 3, week 3: class survey.
