授業の概要
Environmental Issues 1 will focus on what has already been done, including the Rio Declaration (1992), the Kyoto Protocol (1997), and the Oslo Declaration of Sustainable Consumption (2006). Students will study the origins of the environmental movement, beginning with the Conservation Movement of the 19th century. Some of the topics the first semester: 1) Silent Spring (1962); 2) Endangered Species; 3) Back to Nature Movements/Organic Food; 4) Environmental Movement Takes Shape (1970s); 5) Earth Day (1970)—its underlying goals; 6) Environmental Laws (1970s); 7) Exponential Growth—studies on Economic Growth vs. Climate Protection; 8) The Future—what will life be like in 2050, with the world at 9 billion.
Also, in the first semester, we will consider environmental pollution from chemical companies in Mianata, Japan and in West Virginia and in California, from the electric company, PG&E.
Environmental Issues 2 (second semester) will focus on indigenous peoples and how they have become leaders against corporate environmental destruction; it will be more on the International Environmental Movement (versus the US in the first semester) and more on what the world is doing today to address issues of Climate Change and Pollution. We will focus a little more deeply on topics introduced the first semester: the Rio Declaration (1992), the Kyoto Protocol (1997), the Oslo Declaration (2006); the Earth Summit (2012). The topics we will consider: 1) The Rise of Severe Weather Patterns; 2) Humanity’s Special Place & Responsibility; 3) Humanity’s Disconnection with Nature; 4) The Philosophy of Limitless Growth; 5) Climate Change/Earth Destruction/Species Extinction/Political Paralysis; 6) How to Live Sustainably; 7) Intelligent Design/Reducing Human Footprint; 8) The Way Forward. I hope students will gain a deep sense of what the Environmental Movement is doing and how ordinary people are contributing to it.

到達目標
In the First Semester, I hope students will gain an understanding of the Environmental Movement, now nearly 60 years old, that gave birth to an international movement, with the values of sustainable development. We will especially consider toxic waste from chemical and energy companies, both in Japan the the USA, that have caused such horrendous health problems. Many of these challenges are ongoing, since corporations have such power in our current economy.
The Second Semester will take us into the values of indigenous peoples, especially in North America and the Amazon, to understand how their values have become part of the modern environmental movement, with its concept of Mother Earth.
We will also consider such challenges as Climate Change Denial, which has been pushed by the huge energy companies, like ExxonMobile, to cast doubt on the science through FRONT organizations, such as the Heartland Institute. This really has stalled advances in addressing climate change, unfortunately.

授業時間外の学修の内容
その他
授業時間外の学修の内容(その他の内容等)
Most of class time will be reviewing your homework assignments, which are based on the documentary segments.
Every other class will have a discussion. This is for you to develop your opinion and perhaps to debate or at least to compare opinions with other students in your group. Every other week you will also have internet-assignment, for the necessary background information to help you develop an opinion. In listening to a variety of accents, particularly from people whose native language is not English, you will first learn to get the general meaning of spoken English, though you may not understand every word.
Most of your work for the class will be done outside of class, to prepare for the class, especially for the discussion-assignments. I will provide the websites for the video segments. Please watch the segment each week as many times as necessary as you follow the instructions in your homework pages for the Vocabulary, Getting Main Ideas, Listening For Details, Fill In Blanks, Final Details, Internet Research, and Things To Talk About. Plan to spend a half hour on the homework each week doing the homework.
授業時間外の学修に必要な時間数/週
